ON THE RECORD
VOLUME 2 NUMBER 9
FROM THE CHIEF
Woonsocket Police Chief Thomas S. Carey recently visited MIDDAY and spoke on a variety of issues:
STIMULUS MONEY-- $255, 000 will be used to upgrade cellblocks
$81,000 to upgrade computers and for SWAT TEAM weapons
COLD CASES: ----- two cases from the early 90's will be reviewed those of Megan Paul
Katrina McVey. The reason cold cases are re-opened according to
Chief Carey is that sometimes people bring in added information or
improved DNA methods can produce additional evidence.
CALEA REPORT ----- in complying with the report, the police manual is being ugraded
especially in the area of procedures and public information.
Lt. Eugene Jalette has been named Public Information Officer.
TIP LINE ----------Residents who wish to call in anonymously may use the TIP LINE
769-4444.
NOISE ORDINANCE--- expect to see more activity apprehending noise ordinance violators.
IT'S ONLY PLASTIC
I suppose many of us can remember a time when credit cards were virtually non-existent.
Actually, the first cards appeared some time following WW1. Certain businesses issued the
cardboard cards to preferred customers only, but in the 60's and 70's the cards really caught on.
Recent legislation will restrict issuers from raising rates on existing credit balances and will consider a consumer's ability to pay before issuing cards. Does this mean that a consumer may not have multiple cards? The bill does not prohibit isuers from charging new fees to boost revenue. That's right. Don't be surprised if consumers are charged maintenance fees, even though their payments are current. It will be a case of prompt payers subsidising delinquent consumers.
INFO NUGGETS:
INFESTATION: Last week, the town of Hawaiian Gardens, California, was raided by federal agents who arrested 147 Mexican cartel members living in the town. There are 15,000 residents in the town and it is estimated that more than 1,000 are members of the cartel. Talk about an infestation. These roaches have invaded this town. So all of the do-gooders who say that illegal immigration is not a problem should think about moving there.
GRADUATION: According to Education Department statistics, 78% of Caucasians graduate from high school; 55% African Americans and 58% Hispanics. Among the industrialized nations, the United States ranks 18th in reading scores and 28th in math.
LUGGAGE FEES: during the last 18 months that airlines have been collecting luggage fees, they have collected $1.5 billion.
METS MANUFACTURE: Did you notice that in game 2 of the Sox-Mets series the Mets manufactured a run: walk, bunt, base hit. I was almost flabbergasted when Dennis Eckersley
asked, "Have you ever seen the Red Sox do that?" The answer is "No", of course. With the Sox, you just wait for the long ball. By the way. What is wrong with BIG PAPI? There are so many theories out there. Is it emotional or physical?
