Rep. Shallcross Smith Receives Committee Assignments

 

STATE HOUSE — Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) has assigned Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket) to serve on the House Committee on Corporations, the Committee on Education, and the Committee on State Government and Elections.

The Committee on Corporations considers issues relating to financial institutions, business regulation, property and casualty insurance and consumer protection. The Education Committee deliberates all matters relating to public education. The House Committee on State Government and Elections is responsible for legislation relating to state affairs, governmental departments and divisions, administrative procedures, open meetings, elections law and constitutional amendments.

Representative Shallcross Smith was elected to the House in November. She was sworn in on Jan. 5. She previously served the House district in 2009-2010.

 

The Senate is formally opening debate on President Biden's sweeping stimulus bill. Democrats cleared a procedural hurdle on a 51-50 vote with Vice President Harris breaking the tie Thursday. The nearly two-trillion dollar package includes direct payments of 14-hundred dollars to millions of Americans.        The governor of Alabama is extending the state's mask mandate to April 9th. Governor Kay Ivey made it "abundantly clear" she will not keep the mask order in effect after that date. Ivey extended the mask order and other health measures that were set to expire next Monday.        Pope Francis begins his four-day visit to Iraq today. Francis will make history as the first pontiff to visit Iraq, where he will meet with the dwindling Christian communities of Baghdad and other cities.        Classic Hollywood movies that are politically incorrect by today's standards are getting a second look on cable TV. Turner Classic Movies has started a four-night series called "Reframed: Classic Films in the Rearview Mirror," featuring 14 famous films considered "problematic" in 2021. The series includes Gone with the Wind, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.        Amazon Prime Video is supporting Black-owned businesses to promote Eddie Murphy's new movie. In conjunction with the premiere of Coming 2 America, Amazon Prime Video is helping Black-owned restaurants in eight cities to provide over five-thousand meals to those in need.        Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady may or may not have seen aliens. After Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield tweeted he's almost certain he saw a UFO over Texas, he was mocked by Fox Sports talk radio host Colin Cowherd, who joked that "Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady have never seen aliens." A few hours later, Brady tweeted last night, "How do you know I've never seen aliens Colin?"
