"BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT"

A few weeks ago, Town Planner Tom Kravitz and I were fortunate to be asked to host a small business visit for Governor Raimondo.  We arranged opportunity for the Governor to meet with the leadership and personnel of both KB Surfaces and National Marker Corporation (NMC) in their respective facilities on Providence Pike in our industrial park.  What we saw were energized business leaders who are growing businesses through continuing investment in new people, new machinery and most of all new ideas on how to bring quality products to customers quickly and cost effectively.  At KB Surfaces, we saw how their team of people, with some high tech mechanical equipment, can create stone counters and fine cabinetry for a single building nearby or dozens of Starbuck locations all over the world.  They can also create custom closet shelving for one home or a thousand with the same careful craftsmanship.

Over at National Marker, we met people who design their own machines to continuously improve each product and their ability to produce just a few signs for a local use, or hundreds of thousands of signs for use anywhere in the world all in a matter of hours.  At NMC, we also saw how they were using their extensive creative talents to make new highly customized facing systems for movable office partitions and even custom marketing material for placement on floors and walls.  The creative talent in each business that we witnessed with Governor Raimondo was awesome.

Most impressive of all was the pride that we saw in the ability of good people to create products that exceed customer expectations.  When there is need for cabinetry and surfaces to improve a home or business, contact Tracey Beck at The Beck Companies.  When signs or graphics of almost any kind are needed, talk with Michael Black at National Marker Corporation.  We are proud to have both companies as part of our community and hope others near and far can connect with them for new business opportunity.

We are very interested in getting to know all of the Town's businesses and their needs.  Please contact the Planner at extension 312 or Administrator at 303 if you would like to set up a site visit.  We are here to support and to help grow every North Smithfield business.

Ham Radio Training Class

Event Details

An introduction to Ham Radio and a class will be offered on Thursday July 13 from 7 PM to 9PM at the North Smithfield Emergency Management Office at 575 Smithfield Rd, North Smithfield, RI

Ham Radio, or Amateur Radio, allows people to communicate via radio over distances ranging from a few to thousands of miles. Unlike phones, amateur radio does not rely on a network which can go down in critical times. Ham Radio allows you to speak to many people all at once, as opposed to dialing a number and leaving a message.

Several states, including New Hampshire and Vermont, have restricted the use of phones while driving. The use of amateur radio equipment in vehicles is not restricted because you do not dial phone numbers nor hold the unit up to your ear. This allows conversation to take place while driving, as long as it is done responsibly and safely.

Ham Radio forms a large community network, much like Facebook. Voice conversations can easily take place among many participants. And the conversation is free - no bill at the end of the month!

While ham radio's primary mission is to serve the public in emergencies, most of the activity is enjoying conversation with others. Some like to talk, others would rather listen and experiment. While talking, the radio ham operators get very good at communicating - a critical skill which could bring needed relief one day.

Before anyone can transmit, they must receive an FCC license. A test is given to prove that you understand rules and regulations, safety and basic electronics. Knowledge of Morse Code is no longer required. The July 13th class will provide training for the first license level, which is technician.

The cost of the class is free, however, a study guide is required, which is $21.00. To register call the EMA office at 767-2206 or send an e-mail of interest to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The Little Red Schoolhouse

Open for Visitors

The Little Red Schoolhouse will be open for visitors on Thursday, June 22, 2017 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and again on Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm.

This is a great opportunity to take a look inside, talk with a former student who can share what it was like going to a one-room schoolhouse, and learn a little history of our town.  While you are there, view our "Pickets of Memories" fence and see a variety of historical gifts the Association has available.
