Rep. McLaughlin lauds legislation allowing Central Falls to issue historic bonds to build, repair city schools
STATE HOUSE — Rep. James N. McLaughlin (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls) has thanked his fellow lawmakers for supporting legislation that authorizes the city of Central Falls to build and repair schools throughout the city.
The law (2021-H 6408A, 2021-S 0951aa), which was signed by Gov. Dan McKee Monday, authorizes the city of Central Falls to issue bonds, notes or other evidences of indebtedness in an amount not to exceed $5.76 million to finance the construction, renovation, improvement, alteration, repair, furnishing and equipping of schools and school facilities in the city.
“The high school in Central Falls is very old and it’s in pretty rough shape,” said Representative McLaughlin, who co-sponsored the legislation and whose district houses Central Falls High School. “It’s served its purpose, but the time has come to replace it to ensure the well-being of the city’s students.”
Passage of the legislation allows the city to schedule a bond referendum on Nov. 2 asking the voters of Central Falls for approval.
Representative McLaughlin, who has long advocated for the legislation, also thanked the governor and the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) and Sen. Jonathon Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket).
“I appreciate the support of my fellow legislators in getting this bill passed,” said Representative McLaughlin. “This legislation is an important part of Central Falls’ comeback story.”
Opening statements could begin as soon as Monday in former President Trump's hush money trial. All 12 jurors and a panel of six alternatives wrapped up in New York City today. The panel will decide the fate of the first ex-president in American history to stand trial on criminal charges.
