Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent, of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, announces that on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, members of the Rhode Island State Police Detective Bureau petitioned eight (8) juveniles to the Rhode Island Family Court as a result of an investigation into a disturbance at the Rhode Island Training School on July 26, 2017.  The petitions include charges ranging from 1) Assault with a Deadly Weapon—Felony Assault; 2) Assault on a Correctional Officer or Training School Employee; and 3) Vandalism.

On July 26, 2017, at approximately 9:00 p.m., State Police Headquarters received a call from the Training School reporting a riot in progress.  An investigation revealed that at approximately 9:00 p.m., staff members began to move the residents into their rooms when one or more refused.  As the staff attended to the non-compliant resident(s), one or more additional resident(s) grabbed a broom stick and assaulted a staff member with it.  Another resident then assaulted the same staff member with a chair, and one resident approached the command center and unlocked the remaining room doors, allowing all 20 residents into the common area.  At the time of the incident four (4) staff members were assigned to this module. Responding to an alert, additional staff members arrived and assisted in securing the scene.  The incident resulted in injuries to four (4) staff members and two (2) juvenile detainees.  The injured were treated and transported to Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital by Cranston Fire Department Rescue.
