Two senators are pushing hard for a bill aimed at protecting Special Counsel Robert Mueller [[ MULL-er ]]. Arizona Republican Jeff Flake and Delaware Democrat Chris Coons asked for the bill to be brought to a vote in the full Senate, but Majority Leader Mitch McConnell prevented it. Speaking on the Senate floor, each explained that the bill is needed now more than ever because of the recent firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the installation of acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.        California Governor Jerry Brown is calling the wildfires burning across his state unprecedented and overwhelming. After surveying damage left behind by the Camp Fire in the town of Paradise, Brown promised fast relief through a new executive order. The Camp Fire in Northern California is now the deadliest fire in the state's history, killing at least 48 people.        President Trump is backing a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill. At the White House today, Trump threw his weight behind the First Step Act. The bill sets up sweeping reforms of U.S. criminal justice sentencing laws. Trump said it will give former inmates a second chance at life after they have served their time. He stressed that it will also make communities safer.        California Republican Kevin McCarthy is being chosen as the minority leader in the House. McCarthy is the current majority leader but Democrats regained control of the House in last week's midterm elections. McCarthy told reporters today that his top priority will be to win back the House majority in two years.        One of the four family members in Ohio arrested in connection with one of the most brutal crimes to ever take place in the state is in court today. Members of the Wagner family were charged with aggravated murder for the execution-style killings of eight members of the Rhoden family back in 2016. The Rhoden family -- seven adults and one teen -- were shot and killed in 2016, a brutal crime that came to be known as the "Pike County Massacre."        A painting celebrating the independence of women in 1929 is selling for nearly 92-million dollars. Edward Hopper's "Chop Suey" was auctioned off today in New York and brought in the most of any painting by the American. The painting shows two modern women eating at a restaurant at a time when women rarely socialized without men.
