Sen. Cano’s resolution celebrating International Women’s Day passes the Senate

STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano’s (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) resolution (2021-S 0565) celebrating International Women’s Day passed the Rhode Island Senate.

This year’s theme of the annual celebration is “Choose to Challenge,” which highlights the struggle to create an inclusive world for all.  The campaign theme states, “A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day.  We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let's all choose to challenge.”

“The unique challenges and struggles that women face on a daily basis have only been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic and women the world over deserve recognition for their work, dedication, and sacrifices.  It is for these reasons that I was honored to introduce the International Women’s Day 2021 resolution in the Senate.  As our society continues to grapple with building a more fair and equitable society, the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Choose to Challenge,’ could not be more important and I ask all to embrace this theme and choose to challenge what is wrong, inappropriate, and unjust in our society, so that we may make a better world for ourselves and the generations yet to come,” said Senator Cano.

International Women’s Day is a day to acknowledge the plight of women and to reflect on the achievements of women and the fight for gender equality. It is also a day to acknowledge the strides the world has taken in advancing women’s rights, freedoms and protections.  The United Nations has recognized and celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 since 1975.
