Woonsocket Announces July 8th Mailing Date

for Fiscal Year 2022 Motor Vehicle Tax Bills

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced today that the City of Woonsocket will be mailing this fiscal years (July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022) Motor Vehicle Tax bills on Thursday, July 8th. The first quarters Motor Vehicle Tax payment is due July 15th; however, the City will offer a payment grace period that ends Monday, July 26, 2021.

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated, "This years Motor Vehicle Tax bills contain welcome reductions due to the States Motor Vehicle Phase Out Program that will give the majority of our city’s drivers a lower tax." The Mayor added, "The lower Motor Vehicle Tax bills in combination with this years property tax rate reductions offer meaningful fiscal year 2022 tax relief for our residents and businesses.

The new Motor Vehicle Tax bills reflect adjustments from the States Motor Vehicle Phase Out Program which lowered the Motor Vehicle Tax rate from $35.00/$1,000 to $30.00/$1,000 and the percentage of NADA retail value from 80% to 75%, while increasing the exemption amount from $4,000 to $5,000. Additionally, all motor vehicles 15 years and older are completely exempt from taxation.

The Motor Vehicle Tax is a tax on registration and is based on the number of days each motor vehicle was registered in Woonsocket during the previous tax year. If you dispose of a vehicle, you must cancel your registration and turn in your plates at the RI Department of Motor Vehicles to avoid further taxation. Address changes must also be recorded through the RI Department of Motor Vehicles.
