Sen. Cano presents $1,000 donation to the Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina for Senate’s winter coat drive

STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) today presented the Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina in Providence with a $1,000 donation from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston in conjunction with the Senate’s annual holiday coat drive. 

The coat drive was led by Senator Cano and Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown). 

The Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina will donate the much-needed coats and other winter supplies to the underserved community, particularly to individuals of color.  Alongside the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, the Tzu Chi Foundation of Boston also donated coats to the Senate drive.

“I am beyond grateful for the outpouring of support this year’s coat drive received and that our most vulnerable Rhode Islanders will be able to keep warm this winter.  From the bottom of my heart, I thank the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, the Tzu Chi Foundation of Boston, the Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina and most importantly, every individual who donated these crucial winter items for the less fortunate.  Rhode Islanders are committed to the season of giving this year and the success of this coat drive proves that,” said Senator Cano.

“Between more than a year and a half of the pandemic and our housing crisis, there are so many people who are facing challenges and insecurity. Buy Nothing Day has become a critical resource in our state, giving people a place where they know they can get their basic needs for warm clothes met every year, no questions asked. We are very happy to be able to be a part of it, and I truly thank every person and organization who contributed to the success of this event and had a part in keeping another individual warm and safe during the Rhode Island’s cold winter months,” said Senator Euer.

“Rhode Islanders really delivered this year in coming out to help their fellow residents as the cold weather comes to our state.  I thank Senator Cano and Senator Euer for leading the charge on this important yearly event that demonstrates the care and compassion that Rhode Islanders have for each other,” said Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence).

The Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina serves as an entry point for the people of the state of Rhode Island to receive long-term mental health services in the Spanish language. They also offer comprehensive social assistance, educational and professional, preventive physical health and internal health services.

The Senate collected coats, hats, gloves and other winter gear for all ages and sizes at the service entrance of the State House through the month of November. All donated items will be available on Buy Nothing Day, Friday, Nov. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lawn on the south-facing side of the State House.
