Woonsocket Education Department Signs on to the Rhode Island Department of Education’s LEAP District Support Program to Accelerate Learning

Over the next two years, the Woonsocket Education Department will receive up to $4 million in funds and

additional specialized supports from RIDE to meet priorities and needs in our district

 

Woonsocket, RI - December 2, 2021 - The Woonsocket Education Department has accepted the invitation

by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) to participate in the recently announced statewide

Learning, Equity and Accelerated Pathways (LEAP) District Support Program. The program is designed to

support districts in accelerating student learning as a response to the education disruption of the

COVID-19 pandemic. RIDE will provide the Woonsocket Education Department with up to $4 million

dollars in matching funds to support this work. Districts were selected through a composite index

composed of the following categories associated with pandemic impact: COVID-19 health

metrics; academic performance; population of students from historically underserved student

groups; and school climate and student wellbeing. “This is a great opportunity for our district to better

support the academic and social-emotional needs of all of our students with the ultimate goal of

improving student achievement,” said Dr. Patrick McGee.

The LEAP District Support Program represents a two-year investment that fosters a valuable partnership

between RIDE and the district. The program will enable the district to prioritize our specific needs and

continue to build complimentary supports for our school community. In addition to the matching funds,

the district will receive a designated LEAP District Support Fellow to support our work, workshops and

professional development through the Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR) at Harvard

University’s Proving Ground program, support with data analysis and disaggregation,

and specific supports tailored to our districts’ unique needs.

Throughout this process, we will solicit the feedback and input of all our community stakeholders for an

inclusive and successful process. This collaborative work aims to improve student outcomes for all of our

students and will enhance the efforts currently underway or in preparation in our district to accelerate

learning in the wake of the pandemic.
