POST STORM UPDATE

The damage caused by the storm early this week certainly took over our things to do.  It has been an interesting week,  and for too many, the stress and discomfort is yet to end.  But we are recovering.  In the aftermath, I must note that while there was obvious strain in the voices and messages that came to us here in the town offices, there was also great understanding, respectful dialog and resounding patience.  In my travels to identify conditions and make them known to National Grid, I learned that neighbors were helping neighbors with water supply for people, and for animals, and in one case of many I am sure an extension cord from a generator was run a long distance across yards and a street.  In a statewide discussion of the response efforts, we clearly need to discuss the events of this storm and the collective response effort, in an effort to be better prepared in the future.  Was the storm unusual because it came from more of a southerly direction with later than usual leaf cover?  Were crews not available because of the storms in other parts of the country?  Did National Grid underestimate the potential impact?  Good questions that we must answer at the right level.  Right now, I think it is important to commend people in the Grid crews who have brought us almost all the way back.  I also think we need to recognize people for being good neighbors by offering the help that could be provided while waiting for the service crews to reach each downed wire.  It is those acts of help and kindness that make us who we are.
