City’s Yard Waste Curbside Collection Begins April 9

WOONSOCKET, RI: "With the arrival of spring, the City’s curbside collection of yard waste is now underway. This convenient service will make spring cleanup of properties over the next couple of months that much easier," said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt.

The City offers the weekly pickup of yard waste solely to residents who live within single-family residences and multi-family houses containing no more than three units. The weekly curbside collection will occur on the regularly scheduled trash collection day between Monday, April 9, 2018 and Friday, June 15, 2018.

The City considers grass clippings, small branches or weeds as yard waste. It may only be stored within either paper compost bags or lid-covered barrels entirely apart from household refuse and recyclables. It is illegal to combine yard waste with household refuse or recyclables.

The exterior of each barrel must be clearly marked with the words Yard Waste to help easily identify its contents to City crews. Additionally, residents are asked to refrain from using tape or similar adhesive to secure any portion of the bags or barrels. Residents should place their containers at the curb by 7 a.m. on their regularly scheduled trash collection day.

As an alternative to curbside collection, Woonsocket residents can bring their yard waste in containers for emptying to the compost facility located in neighboring Blackstone, MA. Its hours of operation are Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

The facility requires Woonsocket residents to present a City-issued yard waste sticker upon arrival. Residents can purchase the $25 stickers from the Woonsocket Department of Public Works (DPW) upon showing proof of residency, personal identification and a valid registration for a non-commercial vehicle.

"All yard waste stickers issued prior to January 2018 have expired," noted City Superintendent of Solid Waste Mike Debroisse." Commercial vehicles are excluded from this program."

The DPW’s office is located at City Hall, 169 Main Street, 3rd floor. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
