The Woonsocket Harris Public Library, 303 Clinton Street, will host
An Evening with a Member of the 'Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War’, The Grand Army of the Republic and the 'Voice of Billy Yank' on Monday, June 4th at 7pm.

Come meet Steve Hackett, Past Camp Commander of The Gen. Zenas R. Bliss, Camp # 12 Department of RI, SUVCW and Private in the RI Militia, who will be dressed as a Union Artillery soldier detailed to the Infantry circa 1864. As a re-enactor, he will discuss the life of a foot soldier and the technological advancements that made the Civil War the 'last of the Romantic wars and the first of the Modern wars.’

View historical pieces such as leather gear and a reproduction model 1863 Springfield rifle, period antique pistols and sabre, artillery shells and a few expended bullets. Learn about the origin of the Medal of Honor and the development of the military award system. Some of these items will remain on exhibit in the library throughout the month of June in recognition of the 150th Anniversary of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) in Rhode Island and the 150th anniversary of "Memorial Day" as we know it on a national scale. This presentation is free and open to all. For more information, please call the library at 401-769-9044.
