Message from Town Administrator

Gary Ezovski

The inspiration provided by our local VFW Post leadership will again result in a parade on Memorial Day in North Smithfield. And yes, as usual, it will be small by most standards. Our boy and girl scouts of all ages and levels will be with us I trust. There will be candy thrown to kids. The outstanding North Smithfield High School Band will march and play. Our own Miss Teen RI US Gianna Paul will be with us. Former Administrator Thibault will be Grand Marshal. There will be some old cars and trucks, and a new fire/rescue truck or two! Most importantly there will be veterans and our flags proudly carried by our police and fire color guards. If you haven’t signed up to march, please come to line North Main, Greene and School Streets. Come to be part of the remembrance program at town hall. Come to remember those that gave all so we might enjoy unmatched freedom. Be proud of our little parade. It is us saying we remember and won’t ever forget!

Of course, our newsletter wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t include bridge and road project updates. We have been advised by RIDOT that the reconfiguration of the 146 A and School Street intersection will begin next week. That will include “adding a left turn lane and phase on Victory Highway, as well as upgrading some signal equipment and wheelchair ramps/pedestrian accommodations, and limited pavement micro mill and overlay for new traffic signal loop detectors." It is anticipated that the work will take four weeks to complete. This is a long-awaited change that should improve traffic flow. Please drive carefully in the area as the crews accomplish this work in relatively tight quarters.

As to the extended closure of Connector Road/ Old Great Road, I tried to get an update this morning, but the PM is away. I am hoping to hear that project will wrap up soon so the road can be reopened. Also, scheduling updates for both the reconstruction of the Great Road Bridge over the Branch River and the Great Road bridge over the railroad near Lapre have been provided. They indicate start of construction on those projects remains delayed until next year.

Got questions? Let us know by responding to this email. We don’t always have every answer but we will try to find one!

All Town Hall Offices will be closed on Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day! Join us in Slatersville for the parade that steps off from Slatersville Plaza at 10:30 and wraps up at the Village Haven after a short remembrance program at Town Hall. May we all take time to reflect on those who gave all to preserve this land of the free.

There will be no trash collection on Monday, May 27th. Tuesday through Friday collection will be postponed one day for the rest of the week.

North Smithfield Heritage Fair

The North Smithfield Heritage Association with the support of many town sponsors will hold its annual Heritage Fair in Slatersville from 11:00 am through 5:00 pm, on Monday, May 27th immediately following the VFW Memorial Day Parade. Organizers hope to promote the town’s rich history and to raise funds for their preservation efforts.

Exhibits at Heritage Hall include antiques and artifacts related to the town and Heritage Association merchandise sales. The association encourages residents and supporters to loan antiques, old photos, pictures, etc. for display. Drop off at 1:00pm on Sunday, May 26th at Heritage Hall, 101 Greene St, Slatersville. Local cemetery historian, Gail Denomme, will conduct walking tours of the Slatersville Cemetery at 1pm and 3pm.

Exhibits at the Kendall Dean School grounds include, a Native American exhibit, Civil War era re-enactors, and a NSPD sponsored Touch a Truck display.

The Slatersville Congregational Church, UCC will open its doors for visitors and music by local school musicians. The National Park Service will offer two Slatersville walking tours at 12pm and 2pm. Meet at the front steps of the Church.

Mastery Martial Arts will feature displays and demonstrations on the Church Commons throughout the afternoon. Local vendors will sell a variety of wares there as well. Local civic groups may also set up exhibits.

Organizers will offer food and beverage sales. Since this is a family oriented event, they will not allow liquor sales or consumption.

NSPD will restrict traffic to one way from Heritage Hall to the Church Commons. Remote parking is available at St. John’s Church, the Village Haven Restaurant and Pacheco Recreation Park. The RI Public Transit Authority will provide a Trolley shuttle between the remote parking lots and the Church Commons.

Besides the shuttle, RIPTA will make one morning pick up at The Meadows, Gatewood Apartments, Deerfield Commons and Laurelwood and make one afternoon return trip.

A WORD OF ADVICE FROM HOMELAND SECURITY

PREPARE FOR THE HOT TEMPERATURES

It’s May already; can you believe it? People are still running their heat. The weather can change from one minute to the other.

Last summer we had several months of hot weather and humidity. No, it does not have to be near 100, but with the temperature/humidity index(THI) it may feel like it.

Here are some ideas to think about, not only for you, but your pets too. The elderly are very prone to extremes of temperature. Do you have an elderly neighbor? Please check on them during the summer.

Extreme Heat

Extreme Heat often results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards. In most of the United States, extreme heat is defined as a long period (2 to 3 days) of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees. In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to death by overworking the human body. Remember that:

  • Extreme heat can occur quickly and without warning.
  • Older adults, children, and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat.
  • Humidity increases the feeling of heat as measured by a heat index.

IF YOU ARE UNDER AN EXTREME HEAT WARNING:

  • Find air conditioning.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Watch for heat illness.
  • Wear light clothing.
  • Check on family members and neighbors.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN EXTREME HEAT THREATENS:

Prepare NOW

  • Find places in your community where you can go to get cool.
  • Keep your home cool by doing the following:
  • Cover windows with drapes or shades.
  • Weather-strip doors and windows.
  • Use window reflectors, such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
  • Add insulation to keep the heat out.
  • Use attic fans to clear hot air.
  • Install window air conditioners and insulate around them.
  • Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illness.

Be Safe DURING

  • Never leave a child, adult, or animal alone inside a vehicle on a warm day.
  • Find places with air conditioning. Libraries, shopping malls, and community centers can provide a cool place to take a break from the heat.
  • If you’re outside, find shade. Wear a hat wide enough to protect your face.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. If you or someone you care for is on a special diet, ask a doctor how best to accommodate it.
  • Do not use electric fans when the temperature outside is more than 95 degrees, as this could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature.
  • Avoid high-energy activities.
  • Check yourself, family members, and neighbors for signs of heat-related illness.

RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND

Know the signs of heat-related illness and the ways to respond to it:

  • HEAT CRAMPS
  • Signs: Muscle pains or spasms in the stomach, arms, or legs
  • Actions: Go to a cooler location. Remove excess clothing. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if cramps last more than an hour.
  • HEAT EXHAUSTION
  • Signs: Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, or fainting
  • Actions: Go to an air-conditioned place and lie down. Loosen or remove clothing. Take a cool bath. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if symptoms get worse or last more than an hour.
  • HEAT STROKE
  • Signs: Extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees) taken orally; red, hot, and dry skin with no sweat; rapid, strong pulse; dizziness; confusion; or unconsciousness
  • Actions: Call 911 or get the person to a hospital immediately. Cool down with whatever methods are available until medical help arrives.
