NORTH SMITHFIELD – The Town of North Smithfield will hold another “Community-Wide Yard Sale" to benefit the NS Food Pantry, on Saturday, May 18, 2013. This is the third year of this event but the first time a spring date is being added to the schedule.
According to Paulette Hamilton, Town Administrator, “residents can participate by holding an individual or multi-family yard sale at their homes, on May 18. When they register with Town Clerk, their location will be listed on the Town web site and in publicity, so that interested shoppers will have their location.”

Residents who want to take part must go to the Clerk’s office at the Town Annex at 575 Smithfield Road to obtain a yard sale permit for $5.00. Yard sale addresses will be listed for permits obtained before Noon on Friday, May 10, 2013.

Residents are encouraged to make a contribution to the town’s Food Pantry at the same time. “More and more families are struggling and need our help” Hamilton stated. Donations can be made to “NS Food Pantry” to purchase food for summer months when donations typically decrease. “This is a great way for people to get spring cleaning done, to have fun and to support others as well”. Last fall, there were over 30 yard sales held; the Town is hoping to increase that number this spring.

For more information, or to register your location, please contact Town Hall at 767-2200 ext. 301 or mhoward@nsmithfieldri.org.

NORTH SMITHFIELD – The Water Department has delayed water main flushing in the Slatersville, Forestdale, Great Road, Mendon Road and the Industrial Park areas by one week. Flushing was scheduled to start on Monday, April15th and continue through Thursday, April 18th from at 9:00 PM and continuing until 3:00 AM. According to the new schedule flushing will start on Monday, April 22nd and continue through Thursday April 25th. The times will remain the same.
“The flushing program is an integral component of the water department’s maintenance program,” said Russ Carpenter, water and sewer superintendent. “The program enhances the water quality for the area’s residents and businesses.”
Carpenter said water main flushing may cause temporary reduction in water pressure throughout the water system and in some cases may cause discolored water which is not harmful.
“We recommend that water use be minimized during the flushing operation including using water to wash clothes and dishes,” said Carpenter. “Please check your water before use. If it is discolored, run the cold water until it clears.”
For more information, call the water department at 767-2200, ext. 320 or ext. 305 between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM Monday through Friday.

RI National Guard Vets to walk Boston Marathon,

raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Project

When most people join the Boston Marathon, it’s in running shoes and running clothes, with a goal of finishing as quickly as they can. But for these Rhode Island National Guard Veterans – the goal, and attire, is much different. They will walk the 26.2 miles in full gear, raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Sgt. James C. Dube, a Rhode Island National Guardsman who served in Iraq and died in 2007.

In anticipation of their “march,” the Guardsmen have been accepting donations, hopeful of raising significant money for the Wounded Warrior Project. They are asking people to sponsor them with donations that go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project on the Web at http://goo.gl/XBJkt.

The Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit, was founded a decade ago to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured service members aid and assist each other; and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.

NORTH SMITHFIELD –Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton hosted the third annual “Open Government and Ethics Training” in North Smithfield on last Wednesday.  The session included the RI Access to Public Records Act (APRA) and Open Meetings Act compliance.

Lisa Pinsonneault, Special Assistant Attorney General, presented information on the substantive and procedural changes in APRA that took effect in 2012. “I applaud the changes in APRA that give the public more rights and make more records available”, said Hamilton. “Open government is the cornerstone to our democracy”.

Another change in APRA requires persons who have the authority to grant or deny Access to Public Records Act requests to receive training by the Department of Attorney General and must be certified each calendar year.

Over 25 members of boards, commissions and staff attended the session conducted by Attorney Pinsonneault.
