NORTH SMITHFIELD - The Town of North Smithfield will hold its first annual Boards and Commissions Summit on March 9th at the North Smithfield Middle School. According to John Flaherty, Town Council President, the purpose of the summit is to better coordinate, align and leverage the time and talent that members dedicate to shape the quality of life and future of North Smithfield through their generous volunteer work on the town's 15 boards and commissions.
By Charter, some of members are appointed by the Town Council and others by the Town Administrator. “It is hoped that the summit will result in a clearer and shared sense of priority and strategy for advancing our town's long-term Comprehensive Community Plan” according to Flaherty.
The goals and objectives for the summit include:
- Improved communication and understanding among all boards and commissions about duties, scope and opportunities to collaborate in achieving town goals.
- Alignment of individual board and commission priorities with TC's 2-Year Work plan as it may be amended from time to time
- Identification of goals and objectives that are missing from TC Work plan
- Identification of challenges that impede the effectiveness of elected/appointed officials and staff
Once the round table discussions are complete there will be initial vetting of proposals for improvement that emerge during the summit. Dr. Victor Profughi (Professor Emeritus at Rhode Island College and President of Quest Research) will serve as facilitator. The public is invited to attend. The Summit will be held from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon, with a continental breakfast served.
