White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson is out of the running to become secretary of the V.A. He announced this morning that he was "regretfully withdrawing" his nomination to head up the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jackson was scheduled to have a confirmation hearing this week, but it was postponed indefinitely after allegations of workplace misconduct came to light.        A key Senate committee is taking up a bill to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller [[ MULL-er ]] this morning. The Judiciary Committee is expected to decide whether to refer the bipartisan bill to the full Senate. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell recently said he won't schedule the bill for debate because he doesn't believe President Trump will fire the special counsel, who is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.        Teachers in Arizona are staying out of class today in hopes of getting better pay. Teachers are walking out to demand a 20-percent raise, raises for support staff, and more school funding. Classrooms in Colorado will also be empty today as teachers protest their pay.        Authorities in Maine are hunting for a cop killer. The Somerset County Sheriff says Corporal Eugene Cole was shot to death early yesterday. Authorities are looking for 29-year-old John Williams. They believe Williams killed Cole, stole his cruiser, and robbed a convenience store before abandoning the vehicle.        New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is threatening legal action if Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents don't stop threatening illegal immigrants. Cuomo's criticism of ICE yesterday came a day after the feds arrested a man inside a Supreme Court building on Staten Island.        The Houston Rockets are on to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. The Rockets put away the Minnesota Timberwolves, 122-104 last night to win their first round series four games to one.
