NORTH SMITHFIELD – The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the North Smithfield Police Department, and the North Smithfield Prevention Coalition will hold another prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative.

The DEA will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction on Saturday, October 26th, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the North Smithfield Police Station, 575 Smithfield Rd. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This local initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many citizens do not properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away which is a safety and health hazard as the medication gets into our water system. Home cabinets are highly susceptible to theft, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Residents are encouraged to drop and go at the NSPD on Saturday, October 26, to keep their homes and community safe.
