BALDELLI-HUNT SAYS FONTAINE’S FAILURE TO REPORT CAMPAIGN EXPENSES AND DONATIONS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF MAYOR WITHHOLDING PUBLIC INFORMATION

(Woonsocket, 10/24/13) Mayoral candidate Lisa Baldelli-Hunt is calling Mayor Leo Fontaine’s failure to properly report his campaign finance information another example of his refusal to provide the public with basic information about his activities. Yesterday, GoLocalProv.com reported that Fontaine’s latest campaign finance report claimed that he neither raised nor spent any money from October 1st through the 21st, even though he had three paid appearances on WNRI that were advertised by the station as paid time and held a fundraiser on October 6th at a Woonsocket restaurant. Only after the story broke did Fontaine file amendments to his campaign finance report disclosing the information.

Fontaine’s initial failure to report any activity in his campaign report comes just days after the Rhode Island Attorney General filed a lawsuit against the City of Woonsocket for the Fontaine administration’s “willful and knowing” violation of the state’s Access to Public Records Act, failing to provide information to a citizen seeking details regarding the city’s acquisition of land for a new water treatment plant.

“While I have disclosed all of my fundraising and campaign spending information in a timely way, the Mayor seems to think he doesn’t have to play by the rules,” said Baldelli-Hunt. “Mayor Fontaine is a public official and a candidate for public office who seems to believe that he can get away with hiding information and operating in the shadows. He only filed the correct information after being caught by a media outlet being less than truthful in his filing.”

Baldelli-Hunt added, “Unfortunately, this is not the first time the Mayor has tried to keep the public in the dark about what he is doing. As Mayor, he has not been open and honest about the budget process, hiding information and blaming the School Department, the legislature, and anyone he can think of for the financial problems that have happened on his watch.”
