NORTH SMITHFIELD – The RI Department of Transportation has notified the Town of North Smithfield that additional weight limit restrictions have been placed on the Slatersville Stone Arch Bridge, located in the center of town. A lane restriction is now in place in anticipation of a bridge replacement.

According to engineers, vehicles exceeding 15 tons or 30,000 pounds will not be allowed to travel over the bridge, effective immediately. “The integrity of the bridge will be compromised with the repeated passage of heavy vehicles. Police will be strictly enforcing this weight restriction,” stated Paulette Hamilton, Town Administrator and Public Safety Director.

Signs will be posted for trucks to take alternate routes. Trucks coming from the North and South should remain on route 146 and take the Pound Hill Road/ Industrial Drive exits. Businesses who deliver to the town should take notice.
