Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt today announced her support of a design-build approach for the construction of the city’s new water treatment plant. The Mayor had asked the City Council to review its consideration of several sites for the plant’s location and the council has held several meetings to receive public input and expert testimony prior to finalizing its site choice and construction options.

The Mayor reiterated that: “Site location is the council’s decision to make, and that decision and its impact on the life of the neighborhood affected should be weighed carefully.” “Who will be inconvenienced, whose quality of life will be changed and whose property values will be affected? These are the responsibilities of the City Council.

She added: “It is important that we move this project with all deliberate speed to avoid the dangers and public inconvenience that are posed by the current aging treatment plant, and I have communicated my concerns to the City Council.

The Mayor continued: “In my opinion, the design-build option should be the preferred approach for Woonsocket. Using the design-build option will result in a superior water treatment facility, allow the city to use durable, long lasting components and utilize experienced municipal employees to operate the treatment plant. We will have the flexibility to control the project’s outcome and retain good local jobs, all to the benefit of our city.”

According to the Mayor, now is the time to act. “Any further delay of this project will needlessly imperil our citizens, and I ask the City Council to act expeditiously.”

Thank you.
