NORTH SMITHFIELD- Tax bills received by residents for 2014 will reflect values and ownership of vehicles held in 2013. Many people get confused when they receive a bill for a vehicle that they no longer own or only owned for a part of the previous year. Another issue is when an owner of a vehicle does not turn in plates to the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles. If plates are not returned to show a change in ownership, the Town will continue to tax that vehicle until they receive notice that the plates have been turned in. Anyone who no longer owns a vehicle should be aware that returned plates will result in a more accurate tax bill. This clarification is provided so that residents fully understand tax bills received for motor vehicles.
