Mayor Baldelli-Hunt Submits Fiscal Year 2024 Budget to City Council With No Property Tax Rate Increases

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt on May 11, 2023, submitted to the City Council the proposed budget for the City of Woonsocket for the Fiscal Year beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2024. The budget recommends no increases to the City’s current property tax rates, and again reflects the State’s complete phase out of the motor vehicle tax.

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated, "This budget with no increases to our property tax rates recognizes that our residents may have had their purchasing power and savings eaten-up by inflation, and that many are still recovering financially from the pandemic. To not raise property tax rates this year, my finance team, headed by Director Cindy Johnston, and I had to make tough choices in cutting back on requested departmental expenditures and projects."

The Mayor added, "I look forward to working with our City Council in the coming weeks to pass this proposed budget, and keep the City moving in a positive direction."

A date for a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year 2024 budget will be determined during the City Council Meeting on May 15th. The public hearing will give residents the opportunity to offer their opinions on the budget, and suggest changes.

 

The back and forth between Harvard and the Trump administration is showing no signs of slowing up. A judge heard arguments from both sides today over frozen federal research funding for the school. The case is over Harvard's request the funding freeze be declared unlawful and the judge called the situation "mind-boggling."        Severe weather could cause flash flooding in the Midwest and East this week. Elsewhere, a heat dome could send temps soaring into the triple digits. Today the flooding risk is greatest across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. Meanwhile, places like Kansas City and Dallas could see 100 degrees.        The man convicted of kidnapping and murdering the first missing child pictured on a milk carton could be released. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Pedro Hernandez should be retried or released because the jury was given flawed instructions by the judge. Pedro Hernandez was sentenced to 25 years to life after he was convicted in 2017 in the disappearance and killing of six-year-old Etan [[ A-ton ]] Patz [[ PAYTZ ]] in 1979.        President Trump wants to know why Bryan Kohberger killed four University of Idaho students in 2022. Kohberger pleaded guilty to the killings and will avoid the death penalty. President Trump posted on Truth Social that while life imprisonment is tough, it's better than the death penalty and he hopes the judge makes Kohberger explain why he did it.        The former Louisville police officer convicted in relation to the death of Breonna Taylor is being sentenced to 33 months in prison. Brett Hankison was found guilty of violating Taylor's civil rights when he fired blindly into her apartment in 2020 during a botched raid. His bullets didn't hit anyone, and last week, the Department of Justice recommended he receive one day behind bars.        D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser isn't concerned about President Trump's recent comments. Bowser said Monday that he knows Trump is a Jayden Daniels fan, and that the land Congress has leased to the city is the best site of any he has seen for a stadium. The mayor is downplaying a recent post by the president that included his demand for the Commanders to go back to being called the Redskins as part of any deal to get a new stadium on federal land in the district.
