RIPTA to Close Historic East Side Tunnel for Construction

Routes 1, 32, 33, 34, 40 and 61x will be on detour

 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) announced today that the East Side Tunnel will be closed for repairs and renovations starting Monday, March 25, 2024. Construction is expected to last through mid-September. Routes 1, 32, 33, 34, 40 and 61x will be on detour beginning Monday, March 25, 2024, through mid-September to accommodate East Side Tunnel construction. The Tunnel will be closed for repairs during that time.

 

This critical piece of transit infrastructure was built in 1914 to help former trolley lines reach the top of College Hill as they traveled from downtown Providence to the East Side and beyond. The tunnel is still a vital connector today, allowing buses to avoid the steep incline of College Hill.

Starting Monday, March 25, 2024, the following detours will be in place:

 

Routes 32, 33, 34, 40 and 61x

Inbound trips will travel regular route to the intersection of Angell and Thayer Streets, continue onto Angell Street through to Steeple Street and then resume regular route. Passengers will utilize the bus stop on Angell Street at Hope Street. There will be no stops between Angell and Hope Streets and Kennedy Plaza.

 

Outbound trips will travel regular route to North Main Street via Washington Place, continue up the hill on Waterman Street and then resume regular route. At the bottom of the hill, passengers will board at a temporary stop on the traffic island on Washington Place. At the top of the hill, passengers will utilize the bus stop on Waterman Street at Hope Street.

 

Route 1

Inbound trips will travel regular route to Thayer Street, left onto Waterman Street, left onto Brook Street, left onto Angell Street, continue on Angell Street through to Steeple Street and then resume regular route. Passengers will utilize the bus stop on Thayer Street before Meeting Street. There will be no stops between Thayer and Meeting Streets and Kennedy Plaza.

 

Outbound trips will travel regular route to North Main Street via Washington Place, continue up the hill on Waterman Street, turn left onto Brook Street and then resume regular route. At the bottom of the hill, passengers will board at a temporary stop on the pedestrian island on Washington Place. At the top of the hill, passengers will utilize the bus stop on Brook Street after Angell Street.

 

 

President Trump has secured a peace pact between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Speaking from the White House with leaders from both countries on hand, Trump called it a "momentous joint declaration." U.S. officials have been working for months to help the two countries to reach a deal, and Trump thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his efforts. Both countries also signed a bilateral agreements with the U.S. to pursue economic opportunities together.        The Texas state House convened earlier but ended the session after not reaching quorum again. It comes as Democrats have yet to return after fleeing to stop a vote on Republican led redistricting efforts. Democratic lawmakers fled to various blue states, including Illinois, earlier this week. The FBI has reportedly agreed to help track down the Democrats as Governor Greg Abbott and others have called for their arrest.        The commander of NASA's Apollo 13 mission is dead. NASA announced astronaut Jim Lovell died Thursday in Lake Forest, Illinois at the age of 97. Lovell helped the Apollo 13 mission return to Earth after the spacecraft's oxygen tank exploded. The mission was depicted in the Oscar-winning film "Apollo 13," which starred Tom Hanks as Lovell.        The Justice Department is investigating New York Attorney General Letitia James. That's according to multiple reports. James brought a civil fraud case against President Trump and successfully sued trump for 300-million dollars over falsifying financial statements. The DOJ's investigation is looking into whether James violated Trump's civil rights. James' case against the National Rifle Association is also being looked at by the Justice Department.        Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he had "very good and detailed conversation" with his "friend President Putin." The prime minister's post on X comes as President Trump has ramped up tariff threats to a total of 50 percent against New Delhi for Russian oil purchases. India has previously said Russian energy is crucial to ensuring a stable domestic supply.        Two new films at the box office this weekend are off to good starts. The horror film "Weapons" made five-point-seven-million-dollars from Thursday previews yesterday, while the body swap comedy sequel "Freakier Friday" made three-point-one-million. "Weapons" has been given great reviews with a 96-percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to make between 25 and 30-million in its first weekend.
