Good afternoon

This week, we’ve added a Route 37 improvements listing to our Project Updates. As most of you know, it’s a vital link connecting Cranston and Warwick that also has impacts on I-295. This is a long-term project that just got additional funding from a federal RAISE Grant. See the listing, below, for more.

Broad Street Regeneration, Cumberland

Daytime alternating one-way traffic is scheduled on Broad Street, from Meeting Street to Forest Avenue, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will be adjusting the utility structures in a moving operation along the roadway, motorists can also anticipate narrowed lanes, driveways/walkways blocked, and frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zones.

_

Henderson Bridge, East Providence

No traffic impacts are expected as we continue installing the bridge deck drainage system, building a retaining wall, placing the east approach slab (which will ultimately connect the bridge to the pavement), installing rebar on the bridge deck, and adding new communication lines on both ends of the bridge.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Please follow signed detours as we close various ramps within the I-95/Exit 37 interchange overnight for steel placement, Sunday-Thursday nights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. During the same time period, motorists should anticipate alternating lane closures on both directions of I-95, from Exits 37A (Atwells Ave./Broadway) to 39A (Branch Ave.), for steel placement and demolition of the old Route 146 bridge.

Pell Bridge Ramps Phase 2, Newport

Drainage installation will continue along the north side of Admiral Kalbfus Road from the roundabout to the Malbone Road intersection. Navy base commuters can continue bypassing the work zone by utilizing the new JT Connell roadway south of the roundabout and the Connector Road to the bridge. Sidewalks along the north side are temporarily closed; detour signage has been posted.

Elsewhere along the project alignment, traffic signal and electrical work is planned site wide including mast arm foundation installation. The bridge rehabilitation work will also continue along Route 138 at the Third Street, Newport Secondary and JT Connell overpasses and may require temporary lane shifts along Third Street and JT Connell Highway. Flaggers and police details will be onsite to help guide vehicles through the work zone.

Reservoir Avenue Railroad Bridge, Providence

Sidewalks and bridge curb are in the process of being completed, while installation of the bridge railing and grading of the approaches are underway on the west side of the bridge

Route 6/10 Interchange Reconstruction, Providence

Weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., we plan to install drainage pipes on Route 10 North from Broadway to Tobey Street, requiring alternating lane closures on Route 10 North, and cast sidewalks along Plainfield and Pilsudski streets. We also plan to install sheeting between Union Avenue and Westminster Street, and conduct pile driving along Route 10 South, which may result in weekday noise and vibrations.

Route 37 Improvements, Cranston/Warwick

Through this ongoing project, we are replacing or rehabilitating 22 bridges and making safety and congestion improvements on this vital east-west link connecting Warwick and Cranston. Thanks to Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressman Seth Magaziner, we recently received a $25 million federal grant for a future phase of the project to help boost our efforts to right size Route 37.

Below, please find updates for two contracts currently underway within this project umbrella:

Bridge Group 51A: Pontiac Avenue to Post Road (see photo, above)

Motorists have seen a great deal of activity as we rebuild bridges on both Route 37 East and West, over the Pawtuxet River, over Pontiac Avenue and over Jefferson Boulevard. In addition to the bridge work, we have also been upgrading drainage, highway lighting and traffic signals.

Next week, daytime electrical work along Pontiac Avenue requires alternating lane closures from Sockanosset Cross Road to Route 37 East, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bridge Group 51B: I-295 area (see photo, below)

Through this design-build contract, we are building new bridges over I-295 North and South and making vital safety and connectivity improvements for the Cranston Canyon.

Next week, we are scheduled to demolish the deck at the Route 37 bridge over I-295 North and drive piles at the Route 37 bridge over I-295 South. Noise is anticipated. Overnight alternating lane closures are scheduled Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for these operations.

Route 146, Lincoln/North Smithfield

As we continue to improve Route 146, daytime utility work and erosion controls are scheduled with alternating lane closures on both directions of Route 146, from Route 146A to the Massachusetts line, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additional daytime work at the Spring Brook Bridge and adjacent roadways involves shoulder closures along Route 146A during the same time period. We also have one night of alternating lane closures scheduled so we can shift traffic on Route 146A at the Spring Brook Bridge on Friday night, July 21, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Safe Routes, Warren

We plan to offload materials as needed along both the east and west sides of the bridge in the vicinity of the Warren Bike Path. We’ll do some grading before we’re able to install the sheet pile retaining wall. Elsewhere, survey work and sidewalk construction are expected to be performed along Child Street and Hugh Cole Road. Please drive slowly as construction vehicles may be frequently entering and leaving the work zone.

Washington Bridge, East Providence/Providence

Overnight exit, on-ramp and right lane closures are scheduled on I-195 West, between Broadway and South Main Street, Sunday night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This will allow us to continue substructure and concrete bridge deck repairs and to place concrete as part of the new Waterfront Drive off-ramp. Motorists can also expect overnight alternating one-way traffic on Gano Street under I-195 for concrete substructure repairs, during the same time period on Sunday night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
