The Rhode Island State Police arrest a subject for Obtaining Money under false pretenses through the use of a gofundme account

 

 

 

Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of Public Safety, announces the arrest of Alicia Pierini, age 35, of 27 Farm Street, 1st Floor, Woonsocket, Rhode Island on an Affidavit/Arrest Warrant for Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses Over $1,500 and Access to Computer for Fraudulent Purposes.

 

In May, 2016 the Financial Crimes Unit initiated an investigation into an obtaining money under false pretense complaint. The investigation revealed that Ms. Pierini had advised friends and family members that she had a brain tumor or brain cancer. This revelation resulted in a close associate of Ms. Pierini starting a GoFundMe Account for Ms. Pierini to assist with her medical expenses. Many individuals donated to the GoFundMe Account or directly to Ms. Pierini, totaling approximately $28,000. As time went on, friends and family members became suspicious of her claims that she had cancer. State Police Detectives confirmed that she had never been a patient of any of the doctors and cancer treatment facilities that she had indicated. Upon developing further probable cause to show that Ms. Pierini apparently had not been diagnosed with a brain tumor or brain cancer and was utilizing the donated funds in a fraudulent fashion, an affidavit/ arrest warrant was obtained. GoFundMe will be reimbursing the individuals, who donated directly to the GoFundMe Account.

 

During the investigation, a photograph was taken of Ms. Pierini, which the State Police is releasing to ensure that if there are any additional victims who wish to come forward, they may contact the Financial Crimes Unit at 401-444-1201. See the below photograph.

 

Ms. Pierini was presented at Sixth Division District Court, One Dorrance Plaza, Providence, Rhode Island for arraignment.  No plea was entered on the felony charges.  Ms. Pierini was released on $40,000 personal recognizance.

A federal judge says the Trump administration has through the weekend to decide how they will release SNAP funds. The food assistance program is set to expire on Saturday unless the government re-opens, impacting 42-million low-income Americans who are enrolled. The Massachusetts judge said the Trump administration must decided whether to fully or partially fund SNAP using emergency funds by Monday.        The FBI says it prevented a potential terror attack. In a post on X this morning, FBI Director Kash Patel said multiple suspects have been arrested in Michigan who were allegedly plotting a violent attack this weekend. Patel added that more details will be forthcoming and thanked the men and women of FBI and law enforcement.        Senate Majority Leader John Thune doesn't want to get rid of the filibuster. Thune is maintaining his stance as President Trump renews his call to pursue the "nuclear option" and bypass the filibuster to reopen the government. However, many senior members of the GOP fear that weakening the Senate rule could have significant blowback if Democrats regain control.        Many will be celebrating Halloween today, which its modern origin in an ancient Celtic fire festival. The festival called "Samhain" [[ sow-in ]] was the feast of the dead in Pagan and Christian times and marked the close of harvest and the initiation of the winter season. Black cats became a symbol of the day because it was once believed that souls could travel back into the world of the living in the body of an animal, which was usually a black cat.        Most of the country will get an extra hour of sleep this weekend as Daylight Saving Time comes to an end and Standard Time returns on Sunday. Clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m., meaning we gain an hour and more light in the morning. We "spring forward" when Daylight Saving Time begins on March 8th, 2026.        The Toronto Blue Jays have the opportunity to win their third World Series title tonight. The Jays will host the Los Angeles Dodgers for game six of the Fall Classic. Toronto leads the series three-games-to-two after winning games four and five in Los Angeles.
