Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt Announces April 5th Kick-Off for

Woonsockets Annual Street Sweeping Program

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Woonsocket Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt today announced that "spring has sprung" and the City will commence, weather permitting, its annual street sweeping program on Monday, April 5th starting in the East Woonsocket District. Once streets in that district are swept the Citys two street sweepers will move to the North End, Fairmount, Bernon, and Globe districts. Rolling electronic billboards will announce in each district when and where the street sweeping will occur, and the entire program is expected to be finished in approximately ten weeks.

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated, "Winter is finally over, and it is time to sweep our City streets once again." The Mayor added, "Street sweeping not only makes our streets look good and improves public safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, but it also helps prevent sand, salt and other debris from entering our storm drains and polluting our local waterways."

Public Works Director, Steven DAgostino stated, "My department takes a lot of pride in the cleanliness of our streets and our street sweeping program helps to improve both the quality of life of our residents and promote a cleaner environment." Director DAgostino further explained why Woonsocket streets are cleaner now after the winter season than they were years back, "Our switch to a liquid brine solution from a traditional sand and salt mixture for pretreating roads in advance of winter storms has dramatically reduced the sand waste residue left behind to clean up in the spring. In 2014, we had to street sweep approximately 3,827 tons of sand while in 2020 we only had to sweep up about 102 tons. Less sand means cleaner drainpipes, lower amounts of waste that flows into our river and a lighter, less expensive quantity of refuse that we haul away to the States central landfill in Johnston."

D' Agostino advised that to ensure a successful street sweeping program in 2021, residents and businesses need to:

- Prior to the day of the street sweeping, push dirt and other debris from the abutting sidewalk onto the street so that it can be swept up.

- Keep all vehicles off the street on the announced street sweeping day until the sweeper has cleaned both sides of the street.

- Keep trash cans and yard waste bags behind the curb on the street sweeping day.

According to Donald Trump, his hush money trial is "a sham." While exiting the court Friday, Trump again slammed his gag order, noting star witness Michael Cohen can say anything. The jury might start deliberating soon after the prosecution told the judge they plan to call two more witnesses, and could rest their case by the end of next week. One of those witnesses is ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, the centerpiece to the case.       Top Republicans are harshly criticizing the Biden administration's decision to halt weapon shipments to Israel. Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell sent a letter to President Biden expressing alarm over the administration's decision to put a hold on a shipment of bombs. The leaders said security assistance to Israel "is an urgent priority that must not be delayed."       Donald Trump's 18-year-old son is declining an invitation to be a state delegate for the Florida Republican Party. Earlier this week, the Florida GOP chairman said Barron Trump would be one of Florida's at-large delegates at the July convention, where the party will officially make Donald Trump its presidential nominee. Then on Friday, former first lady Melania Trump issued a statement saying while Barron was "honored to have been chosen as a delegate" he must "regretfully decline" due to "prior commitments."        The U.S. is rolling out a new 400-million dollar military aid package for Ukraine as Russia launches a major offensive in the northeast city of Kharkiv. The package includes Patriot missiles, singer anti-aircraft missiles, and other munitions. The aid comes weeks after Congress passed a national security supplemental that provides for more than 60-billion in assistance for Kyiv.       McDonald's is reportedly working on a new five-dollar value meal as consumers pull back on fast-food spending. According to CNBC, the proposed meal could feature a McChicken or McDouble, four-piece chicken nuggets, fries and a drink. The move comes after company CEO recently said McDonald's has to be "laser-focused" on affordability to attract diners.        The NBA Playoffs continue today with two games. In the East, the New York Knicks will travel to Indiana to take on the Pacers in game two of their series.
