Message from the Town Administrator

 

 

 

All Town Offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th, 2017 in observance of the 4th of July holiday. 

 

No trash collection will take place on Tuesday, July 4th.  Tuesday through Friday collections will be postponed one day for the rest of the week. Monday, July 3rd will be a regular trash collection day. 

 

Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July Holiday!

 CAPTAIN WILLIAM CALLANAN

 

After a 28 year career with the North Smithfield Fire Department, Captain William Callanan has retired.  His brothers in the department were present at 7:30 AM on June 28th in dress blue uniform to offer a thankful salute at the end of the Captain's last shift.  According to Department Chief Joel Jillson, it was "a most appropriate send off to a good man who revered his profession, giving so much...... asking little in return!"  Captain Callanan was a volunteer with the department for five years before his full time employment.   He achieved the rank of Fire/Rescue Captain, was the department EMS Coordinator, CPR & AED Instructor, Police Medical Consultant, and in 2015 was recognized as the EMS Professional of the Year by Rhode Island Department of Health.  He has also been the Department Honor Guard Bagpiper, a member of the RI Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums, and IAFF Local #3984 General Treasurer.  On behalf of the entire community that Bill has served so well, I offer our thanks and best wishes for a long and healthy well deserved retirement.  Chief Jillson and I also offer our sincerest thanks to his wife Diane and his children Patrick and Emily for sharing his time and talent over so many years.

Authorities continue searching for the suspect in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot in the neck Wednesday while speaking at a Utah college. Two initial arrests did not lead to charges, and police have now released video of the suspect, asking the public for tips. Kirk's funeral is expected soon in Phoenix, Arizona, with President Trump confirming he will attend.        The State Department says it might revoke the visas of foreigners who glorify violence after the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. On Thursday, Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau said "foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country." He added that he was "disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event."        The Trump administration vows a response after Brazil's Supreme Court sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years for election plotting. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the trial a "witch hunt," while President Trump previously imposed 50-percent tariffs on Brazilian imports in retaliation of the prosecution. Brazil's current president condemned the tariffs, saying the nation "will not accept anyone's control."        The opening bell rings this morning on Wall Street after a big Thursday that saw stocks close higher. The Dow closed up 617 points at a record 46-108. The S&P 500 added 55 points to 65-87, while the Nasdaq jumped 157 points to end at 22-043.        The Federal Trade Commission is launching an inquiry into seven companies that make AI chatbots aimed at children. The agency wants to see how the companies are evaluating safety and working to limit potential risks and negative impacts on children and teens.        The Packers are now 2-0. Green Bay took down the Washington Commanders 27-18 on Thursday Night Football from Lambeau Field. Meanwhile, the 2025 NFL season set viewership records for Week One games. League officials say the opening slate of games averaged more than 22-million viewers per game.
