Rhode Island to Recognize World Diabetes Day with Virtual Event on November 13th

 

This year, Rhode Island will recognize World Diabetes Day on Saturday, November 13th with a virtual event starting at 9 a.m. that aims to raise awareness about diabetes and help Rhode Islanders reduce their risk of diabetes or manage its impact on their lives.

 

The event is free. However, registration is required.

 

Rhode Island World Diabetes Day 2021 will be a full morning of presentations, discussions, questions-and-answer sessions, and more. The program is for anyone impacted by diabetes—people living with or at risk of developing diabetes, family members, caregivers, providers, and other allied members of the healthcare team are welcome to attend.

 

In Rhode Island, one in 10 individuals is living with diabetes and one in three is at risk of developing diabetes. Up to 90% of these Rhode Islanders don’t know they are at risk.

 

“With the COVID-19 pandemic still underway, Rhode Island World Diabetes Day carries the added significance of spreading information about a condition that puts people at greater risk for developing severe illness from COVID-19,” said Megan Fallon-Sheridan, the Program Administrator of RIDOH’s Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Stroke Program. “We’re excited to share this year’s thoughtful and dynamic program. The day will feature tips and conversations to help Rhode Islanders take small steps toward better health—ranging from healthy eating to mind, movement, and healthy self.”

An ICE-involved shooting death in Minnesota is mushrooming into a national flashpoint of President Trump's immigration crackdown. Homeland Security says a woman was protesting ICE when she allegedly rammed her car into federal agents when she was shot. But the Democrat mayor of Minneapolis disputes that, saying the woman was fleeing the scene. This comes just as DHS deployed over two-thousand ICE agents to the Twin Cities in what it is calling the "largest DHS operation ever."        The Trump administration says the latest seizure of two Venezuela-linked oil tankers is leading to a growing cooperation between the current Venezuelan government and the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says interim Venezuelan leadership has asked to work with the U.S. to get the oil back. Rubio says that's a positive outcome, because it shows leadership knows the only way Venezuela can move forward and generate revenue is to cooperate with the Trump administration.        Nick Reiner is having his arraignment on murder charges pushed back to February. It comes after his attorney, Alan Jackson, unexpectedly withdrew from the case today. Reiner, whose arraignment was scheduled for this morning, will now be represented by a public defender. The 32-year-old is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents, Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.        Minnesota state officials are testifying at a Congressional hearing on government fraud allegations involving daycares and other services in the state. Three Republican state lawmakers are appearing before the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The Trump administration says it has boots on the ground in Minneapolis in the form of federal agents investigating the alleged fraud.        Today is the one-year anniversary of the deadly and highly destructive Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles County. Both fires started amid an extremely rare, powerful Santa Ana wind event after a dry start to the rainy season. In Pacific Palisades, 12 people died and more than 68-hundred structures were destroyed. The Eaton Fire, which started on the night of January 7th, killed 19 people and destroyed 94-hundred structures in Altadena and Pasadena.        Sean "Diddy" Combs' ex-employees are claiming they have not received paychecks while the mogul is in prison. According to reports from TMZ, Tri Star Sports and Entertainment is currently managing Combs' finances and sources say the company is keeping such a firm grasp on the music executive's fortune that some employees on his payroll have yet to be paid. Combs has been serving a 50-month sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey since October.
