STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) today presented the Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina in Providence with a $1,000 donation from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston in conjunction with the Senate’s annual holiday coat drive.

The coat drive was led by Senator Cano and Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown).

The Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina will donate the much-needed coats and other winter supplies to the underserved community, particularly to individuals of color.  Alongside the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, the Tzu Chi Foundation of Boston also donated coats to the Senate drive.

“I am beyond grateful for the outpouring of support this year’s coat drive received and that our most vulnerable Rhode Islanders will be able to keep warm this winter.  From the bottom of my heart, I thank the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, the Tzu Chi Foundation of Boston, the Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina and most importantly, every individual who donated these crucial winter items for the less fortunate.  Rhode Islanders are committed to the season of giving this year and the success of this coat drive proves that,” said Senator Cano.

“Between more than a year and a half of the pandemic and our housing crisis, there are so many people who are facing challenges and insecurity. Buy Nothing Day has become a critical resource in our state, giving people a place where they know they can get their basic needs for warm clothes met every year, no questions asked. We are very happy to be able to be a part of it, and I truly thank every person and organization who contributed to the success of this event and had a part in keeping another individual warm and safe during the Rhode Island’s cold winter months,” said Senator Euer.

“Rhode Islanders really delivered this year in coming out to help their fellow residents as the cold weather comes to our state.  I thank Senator Cano and Senator Euer for leading the charge on this important yearly event that demonstrates the care and compassion that Rhode Islanders have for each other,” said Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence).

The Centro de Innovación Mujer Latina serves as an entry point for the people of the state of Rhode Island to receive long-term mental health services in the Spanish language. They also offer comprehensive social assistance, educational and professional, preventive physical health and internal health services.

The Senate collected coats, hats, gloves and other winter gear for all ages and sizes at the service entrance of the State House through the month of November. All donated items will be available on Buy Nothing Day, Friday, Nov. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lawn on the south-facing side of the State House. The FBI is leading the investigation into the deadly shooting of a woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said it was notified that it "would no longer have access to the case material, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation." Protesters once again took to the streets this morning to demonstrate.        House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Trump administration officials have blood on their hands after the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. In a press conference Thursday, Jeffries called Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem a "stone-cold liar." He was joined by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said there appears to be no justification for the agent shooting the woman, 37-year-old Renee Good. DHS claims Good was using her car as a weapon against the agent when he opened fire.        The House has voted to extend ObamaCare tax credits. The bipartisan vote passed 230 to 196, with 17 Republicans crossing the aisle to join every voting Democrat in support. The move, which would extend the COVID-enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, will now head to the Senate. It is a blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, who has argued for weeks that the majority of House Republicans were opposed.        NASA says the crew of the ISS will make an early return to Earth due to a medical situation with a crew member. NASA announced at a news conference Thursday the un-named crew member is stable. The agency had already postponed a spacewalk scheduled for Thursday because of the medical issue. The space agency said it plans to bring the crew home within the coming days. The four-person crew includes U.S. astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, plus one Japanese astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut.        The U.S. is withdrawing from dozens of international treaties. In a memorandum Wednesday, President Trump said the U.S. has been pulled from 66 international organizations and treaties, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Trump said it was "contrary to the interests" of the U.S. "to remain a member of, participate in, or otherwise provide support to" the organizations, which also advocate for human rights, education, economic development and other issues.        Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has been fired after four seasons. Team owner Stephen Ross announced the news Thursday, stating the organization is in need of a "comprehensive change." McDaniel told reporters on Monday that he would be part of the team's interviews to hire a new general manager. Miami is coming off a 7-and-10 season.
