Woonsocket Martin Luther King Community Committee 2022 Weekend Celebration

 

Woonsocket – The Woonsocket MLK Community Committee celebrates 20 years of service to the community.

 

The theme of the event this year is “Amplifying Voices for Racial Solidarity and Equity.” The theme is intended to inspire the community during a difficult time and to serve as a reminder of both individual and collective responsibility to fight injustices and support one another. In  King’s words, “You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say.”

Sunday Service (free): 11:00am at St James Baptist Church, 340 S Main St, Woonsocket, RI 02895.  The Rev. Natasha Gordon of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Providence RI will be the guest preacher.

 

Monday Ceremony (free):  10:30am MLK Sculpture Site, Mason Street.  Coffee/Tea and refreshments to follow at   Saint James Baptist Church   Dining Hall.

 

The Pentagon is ordering around over a thousand troops to be ready for potential deployment to Minnesota. It comes as anti-ICE protests continue in the state after the deadly shooting of Renee Good by an agent. President Trump has said he may invoke the Insurrection Act as a result of the unrest, however on Friday, he said he may not use it any more.        Millions are bracing for two more rounds of arctic cold this week followed by a winter storm that could last into the weekend. Monday is expected to be the coldest day for the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions while Tuesday will be the coldest day of the week for the Northeast. The cold and snow in the first half of this week is not likely to be record-setting, but the next round of weather shaping up for later this week could be both record-setting and disruptive.        President Trump isn't ruling out using force in efforts to acquire Greenland. In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump was asked if the U.S. would use force to seize the Danish territory, to which he said "no comment." Over the weekend, the President said he would put ten-percent tariffs in place on Denmark and other European countries until a deal was reached for the U.S. to get Greenland.        Talks are stalled, picketing continues and there's no end in sight to the biggest nurses' strike in New York City history. It's now the second week of a nurses' walkout at three of the city's largest private hospitals: Mount Sinai, Montefiore and New York Presbyterian. Fifteen-thousand nurses are on strike for a contract guaranteeing their health benefits, better staffing ratios and improved hospital security.        A new report by the global charity group Oxfam shows billionaires' wealth has risen to a record high of more than 18 trillion dollars. The number of billionaires also grew to more than three-thousand last year with their collective fortunes increasing by 16 percent. Oxfam also said the super-rich often use their wealth to gain political power and media ownership citing Elon Musk as an example.        The Trump administration's changes to the national parks calendar removes Martin Luther King Jr. Day from the list of free-entry days this year. Out West however, California will offer free entry at more than 200 state parks in honor of MLK Day. The free admission is part of the state's Outdoors For All initiative and is being offered through the California State Parks Foundation.
