Speaker Shekarchi statement on the resignation

of Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott

 

Below a statement from Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi on the resignation of Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott:

 

“Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott has led Rhode Island’s Department of Health through unimaginably trying times, and I am grateful for her thoughtful, pragmatic leadership. She has been a steadfast and trusted resource for all of us.

“While the pandemic is far from over, Dr. Alexander-Scott has set forth the framework to ensure that our state is on the path to recovery. I talked to her this morning and expressed my gratitude for her great work throughout the pandemic. I encouraged her to stay.

“In addition to her exceptional work during this crisis, Dr. Alexander-Scott has been steadfast in her advocacy to eliminate health disparities that disproportionally impact some of our communities.

“Dr. Alexander-Scott has led our state with compassion, confidence and dignity. She has been a calming influence, and Rhode Island is a healthier place because of her. I wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”

 

President Trump is getting the go-ahead to deploy National Guard troops in Portland, Oregon. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday that presidential determinations are not reviewable by federal courts, clearing the way for the Guard. Meanwhile, lawyers representing the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago on Monday urged the Supreme Court to leave in place a ruling preventing the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago.        The government shutdown is now in its third week. Another vote in the Senate failed to end the shutdown yesterday. Democrats are holding firm on a demand to extend healthcare subsidies for millions of Americans covered through the Affordable Care Act. No votes are scheduled for today.        Virginia Roberts Giuffre's [[ joo-FRAYs ]] posthumous memoir is out today. "Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice," details how she was groomed as a teenager as a victim of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and other men. Giuffre completed the book before her death by suicide in April of this year.        Los Angeles Angels player Mike Trout will take the witness stand today during a wrongful death lawsuit against the Major League Baseball team. The suit alleges that the Angels knew there was a drug problem in their organization and failed to stop it before pitcher Tyler Skaggs died from an overdose in 2019. He'd gotten the deadly drugs from Angels communications manager Eric Kay.        Sharon Osbourne has announced the death of her dog Elvis. On Sunday, she wrote on Instagram that the Siberian husky had passed away. It comes about three months after the death of her husband, rock legend Ozzy Osbourne. The couple adopted the dog 14 years ago.        The NBA regular season tips off with a doubleheader today. Houston will try to spoil the defending champion Thunder's banner-raising party in Oklahoma City. The nightcap features a Golden State showdown between Luka Doncic [[ DON-chitch ]] and the Lakers against Steph Curry's Warriors from Los Angeles.
