Some Senate Republicans say they're close to reaching a deal to reopen the government as the longest shutdown in history hits day 37. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said yesterday that a mini-funding package that could get bipartisan support is nearing completion. It comes as federal officials are preparing to cut back the number of flights at 40 high-volume airports starting Friday morning as a result of staffing shortages during the federal government shutdown.        President Trump is reacting to Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani being elected the next mayor of New York City. Trump called Mamdani's victory speech "angry," especially towards him. The president added that he felt Mamdani should be nice to him, because he's the one who has to approve a lot of things for the nation's largest city. At the American Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, Trump said "we want New York to be successful," but suggested he'll take a wait-and-see approach on, in his words, "how a communist does in New York."        Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear says the death toll from the UPS plane crash at Louisville Muhammad Ali Airport has climbed to 12, including a child, while investigators say one of the plane's engines detached from the plane on takeoff. Two people remain in critical condition at UofL Hospital's burn center as investigators look over the jet's two black boxes found at the crash site.        Pope Leo is calling for "deep reflection" after seeing that Homeland Security agents refused to allow clergy into a Chicago-area ICE facility to give detainees communion. The Pontiff, who is from Chicago, told reporters this week that people's spiritual rights should be respected.        Tesla's annual shareholder meeting is today and there's a major vote coming that could either make Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire or see him part ways with the electric vehicle maker. Musk's one-trillion-dollar, performance-based compensation package is at stake as well as his continuing control of the company. The tech billionaire has hinted that he might leave Tesla if his pay deal is blocked.        Discord is expanding a system that gives parents weekly updates about their teens. The social media platform's Family Center is being updated so parents know how much time and money their kids are spending and how they're interacting with others.
