City Council Special Meeting - Nov 27 2023

The federal government has reopened. Federal employees will now get back on the job, as they and those who continued to work through the shutdown wait to learn when they'll receive their back pay. And federal food assistance will resume for the millions of people still waiting for their full November payments. Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration cannot force states to undo their delivery of SNAP benefits.        Flight reductions have been frozen by the FAA now that the government shutdown has ended. Flights have been cut due to staffing shortages as air traffic controllers have had to work without pay and many were calling in sick. More cuts were planned until President Trump signed off on ending the shutdown Wednesday night. However, issues remain as over one-thousand flights have been canceled and over 35-hundred have been delayed today at last check.        Record high temperatures could affect millions after an arctic blast hit the eastern U.S. earlier this week. Starting today, places like Atlanta are seeing temperatures around the low 70s, while parts of the Northeast will see more typical November conditions in the low 50s. Tomorrow, cities that had freezing temperatures just days ago will see temperatures 20 degrees higher than normal, with some placing seeing 80 degrees.        The President is signing an executive order aimed at bolstering the U.S. foster care system. The order is connected to the "fostering the future" initiative. It's focused on support for youth in foster care who age out of the system and into adulthood. Melania Trump said too many foster kids end up homeless once they exit the system.        The Trump administration is launching a new military operation targeting "narco-terrorists." In a post on X Thursday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the U.S. Southern Command will lead Operation Southern Spear. Southern Command oversees military operations in the Caribbean and Latin America. In the post, Hegseth said "The Western Hemisphere is America's neighborhood - and we will protect it."        The newly released 2028 Olympic event schedule indicates that MLB players could potentially compete in the Olympics. Dodger Stadium could be the site of MLB players taking the field in Olympic competition for the first time since 2000. The new schedule has Olympic baseball starting on July 13th, a day before the opening ceremony. That would allow the MLB to still hold its All Star Game on a Tuesday, per tradition. There is still no official agreement to send MLB players to the Olympics.
