Statement from Speaker Shekarchi on Departure of Housing Secretary Stefan Pryor

STATE HOUSE – Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi issued the following statement today about the resignation of Housing Secretary Stefan Pryor:

“Stefan Pryor hit the ground running as the state’s first secretary of the Department of Housing and he shared my passion for addressing all aspects of Rhode Island’s housing crisis. He has a tireless work ethic and he produced immediate results in a very challenging housing climate. I wish him well in his future endeavors. I will work with Governor McKee to ensure the momentum we have achieved around our housing initiatives will continue under a new secretary.”

President Trump and U.S. oil executives are meeting at the White House today to discuss next steps involving Venezuela's oil infrastructure. The meeting comes after the U.S. military captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Trump said this week that it could take less than a year and a half to restore Venezuelan oil production with the U.S. possibly reimbursing oil companies for their work.        Anti-ICE protests are ramping up after two separate shootings involving federal agents this week. Protests have not stopped in Minneapolis since Wednesday's deadly shooting of a 37-year-old woman by an ICE agent. On the West Coast, Homeland Security says agents were attempting a traffic stop on an alleged Venezuelan gang member yesterday in Portland when the driver tried to run over an agent and shots were fired. The incident sent two people to the hospital.        President Trump is speaking in some of his strongest terms yet when it comes to a possible takeover of Greenland. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, "We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not." Trump added that he would like to make a deal, but is ready to "do it the hard way" if necessary. The President said something with Greenland must be done before Russia or China move in.        Another oil tanker in the waters near Venezuela has been seized by the U.S. It happened as the U.S. monitors other ships that are trying to evade its blockade of sanctioned tankers traveling to and from the South American country. It's all a part of the Trump administration's plan to stop operations of Venezuela's so-called "dark fleet" of ships that attempt to conceal the transportation of oil that's sanctioned.        "War is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading." That's according to Pope Leo, who decried the use of military force in his annual foreign policy speech Friday. He told the diplomatic corps gathered at the Vatican, "A diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force."        The second ticket to the College Football Playoff National Championship game will be punched tonight in Atlanta. Number five Oregon will take on number one Indiana in the Peach Bowl. The winner will take on number ten Miami in the National Championship in Miami Gardens on January 19th.
