September 11th Annual Remembrance

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt and Public Safety Officials invite City residents to commemorate the 18th year anniversary of the deplorable attacks, the horrific loss of lives and the incredible acts of heroism that occurred on September 11, 2001. The observance will take place at the Woonsocket Fire Department Headquarters, 5 Cumberland Hill Road at 8:30 a.m.

On 9/11, a total of 2,996 men, women and children were killed in those attacks including many Public Safety First Responders who selflessly sacrificed their own lives to save others.
“We continue to mourn the tragic loss of lives of those innocent victims of 9/11 and to praise and admire the numerous heroes who on that day bravely risked their own lives to help others,” said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. “These deplorable attacks are forever etched into the consciousness of our nation and while we still deeply regret the needless loss of lives and the pain and suffering that was brought upon the families and friends of the victims we have grown stronger as a nation and even more appreciative of the freedoms that we enjoy as well as the sacrifices made by those who have helped ensure that these freedoms live on.”

There will be brief remarks by Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, Fire Chief Paul Shatraw and Police Chief Thomas Oates III. Members of the local clergy will give the invocation and benediction as well as lead a moment of silence.

Countries around the world are ringing in the New Year. Japan, China, and New Zealand already held celebrations earlier today. Another million or so revelers are expected to pack New York City's Times Square for the Big Apple's annual celebration. Thousands of officers in and out of uniform will be assisted in keeping the peace by K-9 units, counter terrorism units, helicopters and drones.        Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is criticizing President Trump's recent veto of legislation that would complete a water project in Colorado. Boebert took to X on Tuesday and vowed, "this isn't over," in response to the veto, and she issued a statement to a local news outlet questioning why the president would deny the measure despite it passing in the House and Senate unanimously. Boebert also said she hopes "this veto has nothing to do with political retaliation for calling out corruption and demanding accountability" in connection to her support of the release of the Epstein files.        New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will be inaugurated tonight in what's being billed as a block party. Mamdani is breaking from tradition and will be sworn in, according to his transition team, with "all New Yorkers" on January 1st. Democratic progressive stars including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders will be featured, with AOC delivering opening remarks, and Sanders administering the ceremonial oath of office.        The Justice Department is reviewing over five-million pages of documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. A law passed by Congress required the department to release all documents by December 19th, but it was soon revealed there were many more files than had been previously thought. The department is looking for 400 lawyers to help review the files, looking for information about victims that has to be redacted.        Boeing is getting an eight-point-six-billion-dollar contract to build fighter jets for Israel. Under the agreement, Boeing will produce 25 new F-15s for Israel, along with an option for an additional 25 aircraft. President Trump announced the agreement after his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the next phase of a ceasefire deal for Gaza. It comes despite demands from pro-Palestinian and anti-war activists to end U.S. government support for Israel.        "Zootopia 2" is breaking records at the box office. The movie has raked in one-point-46-billion dollars worldwide since it released in November, making it Disney's biggest animated film ever. "Frozen 2" previously held the studio record. "Zootopia 2" is one of just three films to cross the billion-dollar mark at the box office this year. The other two were Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch" and the Chinese animated film "Ne Zha 2" [[ nay-jah ]].
