Woonsocket Awarded CEIR Grant from State to Help Defray Costs for State

Special Election on March 2nd

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced today that the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s Office has directed $5,885 in grant funding received from the non- profit Center for Election Innovation and Research (CEIR) to Woonsocket to assist the City in covering costs associated with the State Special Election on March 2, 2021.

This special election will present seven referendum questions for voters to decide how Rhode Island allocates funding for important issues like education, housing, childcare, transportation, environmental projects, cultural arts, and commerce infrastructure. Woonsocket had previously received a $31,395 grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a non-profit organization dedicated to modernizing and improving the election process. Funds for this grant were employed by Woonsocket during the recent November General Election to facilitate early in-person voting as well as to make City polling places safer and more efficient on Election Day.

Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated, “We are very fortunate to have received substantial grant money to promote voter engagement in Woonsocket and to help our City meet the costs of ensuring inclusive, safe and secure elections.” The Mayor then urged residents to vote in the March 2nd special election, “This election will present referendum questions that will have a big impact on the State’s budget, as well as on the direction of state and local initiatives. It is important that Woonsocket voters weigh-in on how they feel about each one of them.” The Mayor added, “We all need to get out and vote on March 2nd and this state directed CEIR grant will make voting easier and safer for our residents during a time when we are all still affected by COVID-19.”
