STATE HOUSE — Deputy Majority Whip Mia Ackerman (D-Dist. 45, Cumberland, Lincoln) joined students at John J. McLaughlin Cumberland Hill Elementary School on Wednesday for the school’s annual Flag Day ceremony.

“I’ve been volunteering in Cumberland schools for years and this is my 16th time joining the brilliant young people at JJ McLaughlin,” said Deputy Majority Whip Ackerman. “I asked these students lots of questions about our flag, and they knew every single one! It is so nice to teach them about Flag Day and help them take this first step of civic engagement.”

The ceremony was attended by over 400 JJ McLaughlin students. In addition to teaching students the history of Flag Day and the symbolism of both the U.S. and Rhode Island flags, Deputy Majority Whip Ackerman led students in the Pledge of Allegiance, joined the students in singing patriotic songs and showed the students how to raise the flag. She also presented a new Rhode Island state flag to the school.
