Woonsocket Harris Public Library Selected as a Host Site for
Nationally Traveling Earth Science Exhibit
Open House Scheduled on August 15, 2018
WOONSOCKET, RI: Woonsocket Harris Public Library will host the Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet traveling geo-science exhibit from Tuesday, August 14, 2018 to Friday, October 5, 2018 with an Open House scheduled on Wednesday, August 15 at 6 p.m. at the Clinton Street site.
"Explore Earth is a must-attend event for everyone to add to their to-do lists. I feel extremely proud that the prestigious American Library Association (ALA) has selected Harris Library to serve as the exhibit's exclusive Rhode Island host site and the tenth stop of its national library tour," said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. "This is a big win for our City which is 100 percent due to the library staff working above and beyond to successfully secure a competitive grant award from the ALA from more than 120 applicant libraries nationwide."
Free and open to all ages, this interactive exhibit will be displayed within the library's Children's Room for public viewing during regularly scheduled operating hours. As an Explore Earth companion series, the library will offer 19 free educational seminars with local experts in August and September. Registration via either telephone or in-person opens August 1, 2018. Contact the Library's Children's Room directly at 401-767-4122.
Explore Earth aims to inform viewers about global weather, climate, water cycle and eco-system changes and the direct impact of environmental habits and behaviors of locals.
Spanning 200 sq. ft., exhibit materials comprise six two-sided oversized panels imprinted with informational graphics and facts, a tactile Discover Station and a touch screen computer kiosk with interactive narratives and quizzes stored within. The exhibit is divided into sections entitled Our Changing Planet - Ecosystems, The Web of Life and Environmental Change at Home. According to the ALA, the exhibit is designed to reinforce the essential ways for library patrons to become a greater and more thoughtful steward of Planet Earth.
To date, Explore Earth has displayed at public libraries located in Georgia, Missouri, Alabama, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York. After exiting Woonsocket in October, the exhibit is scheduled to display in New Hampshire through December.
