McKee Launches 2020 Lt. Governor's Entrepreneurship Challenge

 

$14K in scholarships available to high school entrepreneurs

PROVIDENCE, RI – Lt. Governor Daniel McKee today announced Rhode Island's third Lt. Governor's Entrepreneurship Challenge, a business pitch competition open to high school students across the state. This year, participants will compete for $14,000 in scholarships, the largest amount since the program launched in 2018.

 

"The future of Rhode Island’s economy depends on our ability to cultivate and retain young, entrepreneurial talent. The Lt. Governor’s Entrepreneurship Challenge is our way of letting young innovators know that we want and need their skills in our state," Lt. Governor McKee said. "I am proud of the team that helps make the challenge a reality. The Credit Unions of Rhode Island and other local businesses donate the scholarship funds for students; small business owners help us evaluate business plans and Millennial Rhode Island supports the growth and development of the program year after year."

 

Rhode Island students in grades 9-12 can take the challenge by submitting a business plan to the Lt. Governor's Office by Friday, April 10, 2020. The top five students or student teams advance to a Shark Tank-style business pitch competition at the New England Institute of Technology in May 2020 where a panel of judges awards scholarships based on pitch scores. Students can apply and find guidelines for the challenge at www.rilgec.com.

 

The Credit Unions of Rhode Island, a local branch of the Cooperative Credit Union Association, is the lead scholarship sponsor. Additional sponsors include: Dr. Day Care, Massey & Associates Inc., Rhode Island Association of Realtors and Dunkin' Donuts Franchisee David Batista. Millennial Rhode Island, a local network of young professionals, is the program's non-profit partner and fiscal agent.

It also includes financial education and a social responsibility to protect seniors from financial exploitation and to invest in the future leaders of the state by sponsoring the Credit Union High School Basketball Championships and by awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships, especially to those recognized by the Lt Governor’s Entrepreneurship Challenge. We stand proud with Lt. Governor McKee in recognizing tomorrow’s business leaders of Rhode Island through our support of his Entrepreneurship Challenge.”

 

Since 2018, over 90 students have participated in the challenge and 19 student finalists have received over $20,000 in scholarships.

 

Lt. Governor McKee modeled this program after the Kentucky Lt. Governor's Entrepreneurship Challenge, an initiative he learned about during his time as Chair of the National Lieutenant Governors Association.

The government shutdown will continue. The Senate voted 50-43 on Monday against a House-passed resolution to reopen the government, marking the 11th failed attempt. Despite recent public pressure from nationwide "No Kings" rallies over the weekend, there is little indication of progress, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reaffirming that Democrats' position remains unchanged.        Amazon Web Services says its systems are mostly back to normal after technical issues impacted users worldwide. AWS, which is the leading provider of cloud computing services, experienced a major outage earlier today. The issues started overnight with Amazon Web Services, which provides the online infrastructure for scores of sites and services.        President Trump again said there will we be no U.S. troops in Gaza to help Israel. Trump was asked about the possibility after there have been deadly clashes between Israeli troops and Hamas. The clashes took place just days after both sides signed Phase One of Trump's peace plan.        Prosecutors are laying the groundwork to possibly disqualify former FBI Director James Comey's lead attorney. In a court filing late last night, prosecutors told a judge that Patrick Fitzgerald's alleged involvement in giving information to the media after Comey was fired by President Trump in 2017 could be a potential conflict. Comey's legal team accused prosecutors of looking to defame Fitzgerald by suggesting he may have been involved in criminal activity.        FIFA now says the U.S. government will have the final say if cities are safe enough to host World Cup matches. This comes after President Trump once again said last week that he would look into moving matches out of cities like Boston if he felt there were unsafe conditions. Soccer's governing body said, "Safety and security are obviously the governments' responsibility and they decide what is in the best interest for public safety."        The NBA tips off with a doubleheader on Tuesday. Kevin Durant dons Rocket red for the first time in a game of consequence when Houston tries to spoil the defending champion Thunder's banner-raising party in Oklahoma City. The nightcap features a Golden State showdown between Luka Doncic [[ DON-chitch ]] and the Lakers against Steph Curry's Warriors from Los Angeles.
