City Council Regular Meeting - Nov 16 2020

A federal judge may force the Trump administration to fund a food assistance program while the government remains shutdown. A Massachusetts judge heard a lawsuit Thursday brought by 25 Democratic-led states hoping to compel the Trump Administration to partially fund the SNAP program used by 42-million low-income Americans. It's set to expire on Saturday unless the government re-opens.        The U.S. is preparing to strike military targets in Venezuela. That's according to multiple reports which say the targets include military facilities used for drug trafficking. The strikes would mark an escalation against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's regime.        A potential terror attack has been thwarted in Michigan. In a post on X this morning, FBI Director Kash Patel said multiple suspects have been arrested in the Detroit area who were allegedly plotting a violent attack this weekend. Patel added that more details will be forthcoming and thanked the men and women of FBI and law enforcement for, in his words, "standing guard 24/7 and crushing our mission to defend the homeland."        Major airlines are asking Congress to end the shutdown and pay air traffic controllers. The federal government shutdown is now in its 31st day, and U.S. air traffic controllers did not get their paycheck this week. On Thursday, Delta said in a statement that missed paychecks only increase the stress on "essential workers, many of whom are already working mandatory overtime to keep our skies safe and secure."        The real danger from Halloween isn't razor blades and tainted candy, but rather traffic and unwieldy costumes. While the FDA does recommend inspecting candy brought home by trick or treaters, it's also important to cross the street safely. Kids are three and a half times more likely to be killed by a car on Halloween than on an average day.        Horror movies are a big thing this time of year and analyst site JustWatch has a list of the ones we're streaming the most. At the top of the list is The Substance, starring Demi Moore as a fading celebrity who turns to unorthodox methods to regain her fame. Also on the list this year are Talk to Me, 28 Days Later, Longlegs, The Menu, Sinners, Late Night with the Devil, Nope, Pearl and X.
