CDC Updates COVID-19 Community Levels for Rhode Island Counties

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated the COVID-19 community levels for Rhode Island’s counties. Four counties – Bristol County, Kent County, Newport County, and Washington County – are at the “medium” level. (Kent County and Newport County decreased from being “high” last week.) Providence County still has the “high” designation.

 

Each week the CDC identifies the COVID-19 community level in every county in the country as “low,” “medium,” or “high” using case rates, data on hospital admissions, and percentage of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. Regardless of the designation of someone’s county, everyone should take certain prevention measures. 

 

  • Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccination, including booster doses. The Omicron booster doses currently being administered are providing good protection against the dominant variant circulating in Rhode Island.
  • Ventilate indoor spaces as well as possible. 
  • Avoid contact with people who have suspected or confirmed COVID-19. 
  • Follow recommendations for isolation if you have suspected or confirmed COVID-19. 
  • Follow the recommendations for what to do if you are exposed to someone with COVID-19. 
  • If you are at high risk of getting very sick, talk with a healthcare provider about additional prevention actions. 

 

Additionally, CDC recommends that people in “medium” counties consider self-testing and masking when around those who are at high risk for getting very sick. CDC recommends that people in “high” counties wear high-quality masks while in crowded, indoor public settings. (This is a recommendation, not a requirement.) At least half of U.S. states plan to cut off food assistance benefits November First because of the government shutdown. The loss of assistance would affect millions of low-income citizens. Some 25 states are sending out notices to people on SNAP benefits that the checks won't be coming next month.        Nancy Pelosi says local police can arrest federal agents who break California law during immigration raids. The Democratic Congresswoman made that comment Wednesday after Trump said he was sending over 100 ICE agents to San Francisco. Pelosi said, "While the President may enjoy absolute immunity," those who operate under his orders do not.        The East Wing of the White House is being demolished to make room for President Trump's new ballroom. Trump said Wednesday he was tearing down the entire East Wing to make space for his 90-thousand-square-foot ballroom. Trump called the East Wing a "very small building" that "was never thought of as being much."        Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be in Israel today after criticizing an Israeli plan to annex the West Bank. The move would apply Israeli sovereignty to all settlements in the occupied Palestinian region. Rubio said that the plan could derail the U.S.-backed ceasefire in place between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.        OpenAI is calling for the names of all the people who attended the memorial service of a California teenager who committed suicide. Multiple reports say legal documents indicate that OpenAI may issue subpoenas in the case of Adam Raine. Raine's family sued OpenAI, saying the 16-year-old took his own life after online discussions with ChatGPT.        A strike that would have seen a number of Broadway musicals go dark has been averted. The Broadway League and union representing musicians have reached a tentative contract deal. The two sides just hammered out an agreement as musicians were threatening to walk off the job this morning.
