The North Smithfield Heritage Assn and VFW Post 6342 will honor David Schnorr during a brief flag ceremony at 1000 on Saturday, July 6, at the Memorial Town Building, 1 Main Street, North Smithfield.

 

David Schnorr was born October 6, 1950, and raised in Slatersville Rhode Island by his parents, Donald and Jeanette Schnorr.

He graduated from North Smithfield High School in 1968. After high school, he worked for his father‘s company, Don Schnor Excavating. 

In 1969, David enlisted in the army and went to basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey. From basic training, he was initially stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas, and then in Germany.

In 1972 David was discharged from the army.  

 

Subsequently, David became a North Smithfield police officer.  In May 1973, he married Debbie Lightowler.  They went on to have two children, Heidi and David Schnorr, who also were born and raised in North Smithfield. While bringing up his children, David coached his daughter's and son's soccer and hockey teams.  David retired from the police department after 25 years of service to the town of North Smithfield. He then worked for Hood's Construction and later the resource recovery center in Johnston, where he retired.  

 

David has four grandchildren, Hannah, Ryan, Meghan, and Ryleigh who he loved dearly. He continued living in Slatersville right up until the time he caught COVID-19 in January 2021. David passed away on February 10, 2021.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is dead at the age of 84. Cheney's career in public service began in 1969 when he joined the Nixon Administration. In announcing his passing, Cheney's family said his death was "due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease."        It's Election Day with a number of key races on the ballot. In New York City's race for mayor, Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani maintains his commanding lead in the polls over Independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The polls have tightened in the race to be New Jersey's next governor, with Democrat Mikie [[ Mikey ]] Sherrill's lead over Republican Jack Ciattarelli [[ CHIT-ah-relly ]] narrowing. The same cannot be said for Virginia, where Democrat Abigail Spanberger has maintained a double-digit lead over Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears in that race for governor.        The federal government shutdown has now tied the record for the longest in U.S. history. The Senate is set to vote for a 14th time to end the impasse and Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he's optimistic that lawmakers will find a solution this week. Democrats are holding firm on demands to save health care subsidies that keep insurance premiums down for millions, while Republicans have refused to negotiate until the government is reopened.        The Supreme Court will hear arguments over President Trump's tariffs tomorrow. The high court scheduled oral arguments for November 5th after it agreed to fast track the case. The tariffs will stay in place until the court makes a decision.        Waymo plans to grow its robotaxi service to three more cities. The company says it will launch its service on the streets of Detroit, Las Vegas and San Diego, likely in early 2026. Waymo plans to expand in even more cities next year including Seattle, Miami and London.        The nominees for the first-ever TikTok Awards are out. The popular video sharing app will honor the top creators of the year across several categories including sports, fashion and film and TV. Nominees for Creator of the Year include Alix Earle, Keith Lee, Adam W, Brooke Monk and Kristy Sarah.
