Construction-related activities on the new Washington Bridge have been ongoing since June with design, soil sampling, geographic surveying, permit applications, and the ordering of materials. In the next two weeks, crews using boring equipment will be operating on the East Providence shore and on the water. No lane closures are required for this work.
Weather permitting, bridge preservation work is scheduled Sunday-Thursday nights, December 14-18, and Monday and Tuesday nights, December 22 and 23, with up to two lanes closed on I-195 West at the Washington Bridge. One lane will close at 9 p.m., and a second at 10 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m. the following morning. We also expect a left lane closure for drainage work on I-195 East, from Exit 1A to Exit 2A, and if time permits, I-195 West, from Exit 2 to Exit 1C, Sunday-Thursday nights, December 14-18, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
On Tuesday nights, December 16 and 23, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., maintenance crews are scheduled to sweep I-195 in both directions within a moving operation from I-95 to the Massachusetts line. Overhead sign maintenance will involve a left lane closure on I-195 East near Exit 1A (India Street), followed by ramp narrowing on the Gano Street on-ramp to I-195 West, Wednesday night, December 17, from 9 p.m.-2:30 a.m.
Weigh-in-motion system maintenance will also require the closure of up to two lanes on I-195 East from the Providence River Bridge to the Washington Bridge, and on I-195 West, from the Washington Bridge to Exit 1C (South Main Street), Sunday-Tuesday nights, December 21-23, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The approved in-water demolition has been completed to the required elevations. Next week, demolition crews will be demobilizing equipment from the project site and doing post-completion inspections. Turbidity curtains will remain in place during this time.
