On Saturday, August 14th from 10:00am to 1:00pm, the Woonsocket Education Department in collaboration with Thundermist Health Center and St. Jean the Baptist Church will have a Back to School Celebration with free backpacks, food boxes, COVID-19 kits, and vaccines.  This event will be a drive-thru event. 

 

 

 
Stories of bravery and sacrifice are emerging from yesterday's school shooting in Minneapolis. The city's EMS chief Marty Shearer says children were protecting other children, and teachers were protecting everyone after the shooting began. Two kids died and 17 were wounded when the now-deceased shooter opened fire during Mass at the Annunciation Catholic Church. Fourteen of the wounded are children, three are adults, and all of them are expected to survive.        The governor of Illinois and the White House are at odds over the possibility of federal troops going into Chicago to help fight crime. Democratic Governor JB Pritzker said if President Trump deploys troops, "Action will be met with a response." Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Chicago's crime rate is Pritzker's legacy. In a Truth Social post today about Chicago crime, Trump said "Stay tuned!"        More than 17-million people will be screened at airports during the Labor Day travel period. The TSA expects this to be the busiest Labor Day travel period on record as the agency anticipates passenger volumes to be eight-point-five-percent higher than last year during this time. Air travel volumes this summer are the highest the agency has seen in its history. The travel period runs today-through-September 4th, with the peak travel day projected to be August 30th.        HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is at odds with the CDC after firing its director. Susan Monarez was dismissed and several top CDC officials resigned over a reported clash with Kennedy over what they called an "unscientific vaccine recommendation process." The White House said Monarez was not aligned with President Trump's agenda. After the firing and resignations, Kennedy said the CDC is "in trouble and we need to fix it."        Heavy rain and thunderstorms from the plains to the South may lead to life threatening flash flooding. The water pattern is expected to stay in the region into this weekend. Today, flash flood warnings have been issued in parts of Kansas. The highest flood threat spans from areas of Kansas to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.        Sales of Travis Kelce's jersey have been blowing up since his announced engagement to Taylor Swift. The power couple's Tuesday announcement saw sales spike 200 percent, according to Fanatics, the official e-commerce partner of the NFL and Kelce's team, the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the tight-end's best selling day since Super Bowl 59 in February.
