Attorney General statement on denial of permit application for proposed medical waste treatment facility

 

“The Department of Environmental Management made the right decision in denying the permit application for the proposed medical waste treatment facility in West Warwick, and I am grateful for their close review of a proposal that would have impacted many Rhode Islanders.

 

Several months ago, my Office expressed our concerns about the significant environmental and public health impacts that the waste treatment facility presented to surrounding communities.

 

This decision is an apt example of the benefit of having a comprehensive state regulatory process that includes robust public input.”

Senate Republicans worked late into the night to approve the cutting of funding for public broadcasting, global health programs and some more foreign aid. Lawmakers narrowly passed a package that would claw back nine-billion dollars in spending that had already been approved. It's part of the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency - or DOGE - that used to be run by billionaire Elon Musk.        Speculation on the future of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had Wall Street experiencing whiplash on Wednesday. Initial reports that Trump's firing of Powell seemed imminent came out during morning trading, sparking a mini sell-off. But when Trump insisted he had "no plans to fire Powell," the markets quickly rebounded. The President has been highly critical of Powell's refusal to cut interest rates.        The judge in the Bryan Kohberger case will hear arguments over a gag order on Thursday. Kohberger pleaded guilty to the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students and is scheduled to be sentenced next week. The order in question keeps anyone directly involved in the case from speaking about it.        There is new information about the man accused of murdering an 'American Idol' music supervisor and her husband. Robin Kaye and Tom DeLuca were found shot to death inside their upscale California home on Monday. Records show the suspect, Raymond Boodarian, was charged with misdemeanor battery three times last year. The charges were eventually dropped.        Connie Francis, the iconic singer who was one of the top-selling female artists of all time, is dead at age 87. She died Wednesday night, two weeks after being taken to the hospital in extreme pain. Francis made it onto the Spotify charts just this year, thanks to a TikTok trend using her 1962 song "Pretty Little Baby."        The Happiest Place on Earth turns 70 today. Disneyland first opened its gates to guests on this day back in 1955. To mark the occasion, the theme park is debuting "Walt Disney -- A Magical Life" which features the first-ever audio-animatronic figure of Walt Disney himself.
