State Reps win $21,000 for Rhode Island charities at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort Blackjack Tournament

STATE HOUSE -- Members of the House of Representatives won a total of $21,000 for Rhode Island charities today at the Eighth Annual Holiday Charity Blackjack Tournament for Charity at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort today.

“This is an enjoyable way to raise money for good causes throughout our state,” said Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick). “While it was a fun event, our commitment to the communities we serve is very serious, and I’m very proud that we raised more than $20,000 for local charities.”

Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence) came in second overall, which garnered him a $7,500 contribution from Bally's to his charity of choice, Providence Rescue Mission. Speaker Shekarchi took third place, earning $5,000 for Go Fetch Animal Rescue of Warwick. Rounding out the finalists, Majority Leader Christopher R. Blazejewski's (D-Dist. 2, Providence) fourth place earned $3,500 for Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

While Representatives Marvin L. Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown), John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton, Portsmouth), Mary Duffy Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket), William W. O'Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence), and Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket) didn't make it to the final round, their participation ensured $1,000 contributions to each of their charities, respectively: Newport Housing Hotline, Tiverton Senior Center, St. Teresa's Senior Club of Pawtucket, Lymansville VFW Post of North Providence, and Foster Forward.

A total of $60,000 was donated. Thirty-six players participated on behalf of their selected Rhode Island charity. All charities received a minimum $1000. To date, approximately $450,000 has been given to local charities from this festive holiday event.

 

The man suspected of assassinating Charlie Kirk is a 22 year-old Utah man. Tyler Robinson was arrested last night, and currently sits in a county jail without bail. Utah's governor and FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of Robinson today, calling it the result of great police work. Kirk died after being shot in the neck while speaking at an outdoor Turning Point event at Utah Valley University Wednesday.        Tyler Robinson was not a current student at Utah Valley University, but went for one semester in 2021. Charlie Kirk's suspected shooter had no prior criminal record, but now faces state murder charges for Kirk's murder. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson told his family Kirk was coming to Utah Valley University and added that he believed Kirk was full of hate and he didn't like him. Robinson could face the death penalty.        Planned Parenthood will remain blocked from Medicaid funds over its patients' access to abortion. Thursday's ruling by the First Circuit Court of Appeals overturns a lower court order that blocked a ban on state Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood, which was part of President Trump's "one big beautiful bill." That bill created a one-year ban to abortion providers. Planned Parenthood is planning to appeal.        Testimony has resumed in the Florida trial of the man accused of attempting to assassinate President Trump. In a federal court today, jurors heard from prosecution witnesses detailing defendant Ryan Routh's [[ ruth's ]] alleged plot to kill Trump. Those witnesses included an FBI and a sergeant with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Routh, who's representing himself, is accused of staking out Trump for 12 hours with a rifle on the then-Republican candidate's golf course in September 2024.        The son of the billionaire New England Patriots owner is dropping out of Boston's race for mayor. Democrat Josh Kraft, the son of Robert Kraft, announced his exit today, despite spending millions on the campaign. This means current Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is now the only remaining candidate.        The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sunday. This year's nominations are dominated by Apple TV-Plus and HBO. The Apple TV-Plus sci-fi thriller series "Severance" leads the field with 27 nominations. The Apple-TV Plus comedy "The Studio" earned 23 nominations. Over at HBO, the Batman spinoff series "The Penguin" racked up 24 nominations and "The White Lotus" earned 23.
