Mayor Baldelli-Hunt Announces Week of September 25th Start of RIDOT Mendon Road Reconstruction Project
WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt today detailed that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will begin a large-scale road and sidewalk reconstruction project on Mendon Road during the week of September 25, 2023, that will extend through November 2024. The project will encompass stretches of Mendon Road from the intersections of Cumberland Hill Road through Diamond Hill Road.
During the fall of 2023, RIDOT’s contractor, RICON Construction, will prepare Mendon Road for road reconstruction during the 2024 paving season. Work in 2023 will include curb-cutting, wheelchair ramp replacement, ADA compliance enhancement, utility adjustments, and sidewalk restoration where necessary. RIDOT will also replace traffic signals at Mendon Road and Cumberland Hill Road.

Though police details and flaggers will assist construction crews during the fall 2023 preparation stage, RIDOT does not expect road closures or detours. RICON will install environmental protection devices, temporary construction signs, and message boards throughout the project.
The anticipated end date of the Mendon Road preparation stage is November 2023, and all road reconstruction should end in November 2024.
Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated, “I appreciate the support we have received from RIDOT and Director Peter Alviti in maintaining Woonsocket state roads. My administration has prioritized keeping all our roads in great condition, and they have worked with us to achieve that high standard for our state roads. Repairing Mendon Road is a major project, and their commitment to start pre-construction this year will help ensure completion in 2024."
Department of Public Works Director Steve D’Agostino stated, “We have an excellent working relationship with RIDOT, and this Mendon Road project will greatly improve the driving experience for our residents and visitors.”
D’Agostino indicated that as part of this project in 2023, RIDOT will repair some sidewalks and improve curb cuts along Mendon Road to provide easier access for pedestrians, especially those with disabilities. "Mendon Road will be far more ADA compliant than before," stated D'Agostino.
President Trump has banned travel from 12 countries, citing security risks. Multiple reports say the proclamation fully restricts and limits the entry of nationals from 12 countries. The list includes Iran, Haiti, Somalia, and Sudan. People from seven countries will have partial restriction, including Cuba and Venezuela.
