Memorial Day Parade plans are under way.  Our VFW leadership is leading the way certainty that there will be a parade this year that reflects the spirit of the day and the town.  I have been asked to assist Farrell McMillan, Ernest Frappier, Scott Gould, Linda and David Thibault and others to make this a great event.  There is plenty to do so if you or someone you know has interest, please let us know by email or a call to town hall.  May the 28th at 10:30 is the date and time.  Ernie Frappier can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. STONE ARCH BRIDGE UPDATE

Many have asked what is happening in the Stone Arch Bridge reconstruction project, so I have asked the RIDOT project manager if he can provide some periodic updates so I can provide information that will answer a few questions.  This is the message I received this week: "Over the next few weeks you will see us continue to excavate the fill on top of the arch.  Once that is complete, we will start rebuilding and filling the interior with re-enforced concrete to provide additional strength.  This should start happening the second or third week in March."  As I have watched the work from a distance, I have found it interesting to see just how much further they are going with removal.  The photo I took earlier this week demonstrates just how much of the bridge material the contractor has removed.  The side walls and pavement are all gone now, and the arch that creates the structure is clearly visible.  I find it fascinating to still see the excavating equipment working so close to the stone that is holding them up!  Obviously delicate work by confident people.  Stay tuned for future updates.

It was a pleasure to drop by Fire Station 1 this week for a photo with the team of people who were the driving force for acquiring our new rescue unit to replace a less reliable older vehicle that served the town well.  As I told Chief Jillson, I am happy to be even a small part of this effort and thank the members of the North Smithfield Fire Department for their patience in waiting for this replacement and their willingness to always do the best they can with the resources provided.  Hopefully, this new unit helps them maintain the pride they hold in the service they provide our people.  May they be safe in carrying out every mission in this new truck and may every call be successful.

North Smithfield Recycling -- We Now Have an App for That.

In an effort to put trash & recycling collection schedules at your fingertips, North Smithfield Recycling has paired with Recycle Coach to offer a free web and mobile app easily added to smartphones or tablets.  Now residents can see the Recycle Department calendar, details of our collection programs, and learn how to become a better recycler quickly and easily anytime they want this information.

The calendar feature displays trash collection days for your specific address and will even update for trash holiday weeks.  This feature will also display our Recycle Center hours, our curbside yard waste season, white goods Saturday dates, and Eco-Depot and other events.

And to make things even easier, you can have Recycle Coach send you reminders.   Get an email or text message for upcoming events or special collections.  It couldn't be simpler.

"We hope with easy information and reminders sent to your phone or directly through emails, residents will understand all the recycling programs we offer and take advantage of them.  More recycling participation means more recycling in NS, and less trash being landfilled from our community.  It's a win all around," explains Donna Kaehler, recycling coordinator.

The Recycle Coach app is free to download and available from ITunes Store and Google Play. Click here for the web app that is linked on the Town of North Smithfield website. For more information, call 767-2200 x345.

Speaking of recycling, have you ever wondered how much we send to the landfill or the recycling center each year?  Yeah, probably not!  But next week we want to encourage some thought about it by sharing some interesting information about those volumes with hope that we can reduce our future cost by targeting a higher recycling rate.
